New wheels - MTB/Hybrid -advice

Forgive my lack of knowledge of bike parts!

I'm looking to buy a new set of wheels for my 10-year-old commuting bike - it's a MTB (no suspension) with 26" wheels. I have been using relatively narrow tyres, most recently a set of Schwalbe CityJet MTB tyres for my 25-35km roundtrip commute.

I've heard 26" are uncommon on MTB/Hybrids - is it possible, or even advisable, to change to a different size wheel?

And what should I be looking for in a new set of wheels?

26in is still the standard wheel size for MTBs (although things are changing here with 29in now becoming popular on top end bikes).

If this is the size currently fitted to your bike, you won't have an option to change it for a bigger or smaller wheel.

You do have some flexibility in the width of the tyre you go for. MTB tyres have varying widths as there is huge variation in off road surfaces. The range of tyre widths for Mountain Bikes can be anywhere from 1.5 inches to 2.5 inches. I expect if you have 26in wheels on a hybrid tyre width would be at the lower end of that.
