Car needs a new engine - not worth replacing

Need some help as a person with no real knowledge on cars. The wifes 2007 A3 1.6 engine has blown up. The garage says is beyond repair. He is trying to source a 2nd hand one but struggling (reckoned it would be 2k if found). He says a new one would be 5k. I trust him on the prices. The issue is she had agreed to sell to a friend already for 5k. So if he can't replace and the new is 5k then its not really worth replacing it I guess.

So what are her options then for selling it (for scrap I guess). Where would sell it, how would she sell it. Any idea on how much she would get. Based in North County Dublin.

What happened to the engine? Not like 6 yr old Audi engines to just blow up!

As I say I'm no car expert, but basically there was fire coming out of it on the M1, and sparks out the exaust, that the Fire Brigade needed to put out. I assume there would be nothing in an Insurance policy that would help here.

A fully functioning A3 going for 5K seems cheap..I would imaging the same engine from a VW or Skoda would also fit?

    Sounds like 'fire' to me.

that brings me back to the original question. There comes to a point where the engine is worth more then replacing the car. So what can I do with the rest of the car?

if you decide not to repair it you get €200 scrap
if you find a engine and repair it for let say 2k and shift it for 5k your still 3k better off than leaving it there.

Would an engine bursting into flames not be an issue for Audi. I know it's out of warranty but it seems to me that it's a pretty big issue for which they should answer for.

If you have the engine code(required when looking for any engine from the VAG group) then search for engines from all of the VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda range as they all use the same engines.

You could try the likes of IVI engines too.

I would be looking for an exact explanation of what happened though. Where was the fire coming from? the exhaust? Does the engine still run?

@OP, tried to sent you a PM but couldn't ?

It may take some time to find an engine, but it should be possible to get one secondhand. I would expect the cost to be 1500-2000 fitted. As other posters indicated, you need the engine code (the first letters, usually 3, of the engine number from the tax book) to track down the exact engine for your car.

Depending on the mileage / condition of the car, it is most likely worth repairing, and certainly worth a lot more than 200 euro scrap value, worth probably 2000 euro or a good bit more for a clean low miles one.

If you were not interested in fixing it, and wanted to offload it "as is", I might be interested.

If there was a fire that required a fire brigade to extinguish it you'd have to consider that there's more than just the engine damaged. It could easily be damaged beyond economic repair. The good news might be that some insurance policies don't treat fire and theft claims as claims, in other words your NCB may not be affected.

Is the car fire damaged? If so -》 insurance.

If not fire damaged, its lunacy talking about selling for scrap.
