Lads, the father and one or two more are heading down to the macgillycuddy's tomorrow to do Carrountoohill.

Anyone there this week? Is there snow on it?

Thinking of bringing the board and the boots for the descent.

If not would anywhere recommend somewhere to go tomorrow.

Unfortunately don't have a 4x4 anymore so it's have to be accessible by 2 wheel drive.

    Cheers,
    OTB.

You want to go snowboarding down Carrountoohill after a couple of days of snow???

Be sure to pin your blood type, any allergies and next of kin contact details to yourself. It'll make it much easier for the A&E team.

Touring in Ireland is rarely worth it to be honest but whatever your bag is. Amazing how people ignore some of the risks including avalanche, yes they are possible.

But let us know how you get on and I hope you have fun and the conditions are worth the effort.

maybe try climbing.ie to get some local info, people there will know a more about Irish mountain conditions and touring routes. Only climbed it once, from what I remember very steep in places and rocky, would need a lot of snow, but maybe there is a route down?

Here's some relatively recent pics (17th Mar) http://howlingmist.blogspot.ie/2013/03/curved-gully-ridge-in-winter.html

By the looks of that you'll need ice axe and crampons, the route I came up was the Devil's ladder, wouldn't like to try that in winter conditions without the right equipment and experience.

I've previously boarded in the Wicklow mountains and the Galtee Mountains.

I've been up Carrountoohill more times then I care to remember in both summer conditions in shorts and a tee-shirt and in Winter conditions with crampons and ice axe.

Why am I in for certain death?

    It's Carrountoohill, not K2.

Greetings from the Kingdom. I know nothing about snowboarding or mountaineering but just to let you know that down here we have escaped the bad weather that other parts of the country have had during the past few days. Sunshine here today. Yes there is snow on the mountains but just a dusting I wouldn't think it would be what you need.

Cheers Layinghen, I'll leave the board in the van I'd say.

    Sound.

Slapping your head off a large rock on Carrantoohill is just as lethal as on K2. With the proper gear mountains in Ireland will be very enjoyable climing challenges this week and I hope you enjoy it.

    I'm alive!

Just an update, absolutely feck all snow up there.

    Layinghen was right.

Small bit of snow/ice in few of the gullys.

Four of us went, 3 went up curve gully which was icy enough, with one going up O'Shea's gully - (Only brought one crampon!)

Back through the heavenly gates and down.

    Conditions are beautiful up there.

Not half as boggy as it usually is this time of year.
