Everyday alternative to tights

    Hello,

I've done a search and didn't come up with anything but apologies if this has been covered already.

I wear a lot of dresses to work and always wear black opaque tights with them. However, I am sick of the waistbands, find them really annoying - between rolling, riding up or down, being uncomfortable when I'm sitting down (which I am for most of the day)... I'm pretty over it.

Has anyone here switched to opaque hold-ups or even stockings and garter belts for everyday use? If so, what are the best brands in terms of comfort, opacity, longevity etc?

I'm open to all suggestions on possible alternatives to feckin tights. Thanks!

I created a post on this not so long ago. I think I called the thread holds ups if you want to do a search.

During the Winter months it's back to wearing tights - of all colours might I add. Black opaque are so ordinary! Anyway, as soon as the weather improves it's back to stockings... they're so luxurious and extremely comfortable. The fact that only you know you're wearing them is an added thrill too.

i love them. Best of luck.

I found that thread, thanks a million! Exactly what I was looking for.

Like Pippa, I wear stockings/hold ups with a suspender belt more than I'd wear tights. No falling down, far more comfortable without having to yank up the waistband all day. :)

I also like the whole 'wearing something sexy under my work clothes with nobody knowing' bit too. :o :pac:

I've only bought hold ups twice and both times the band was too wide for my legs! Is there any brand that sell smaller ones? I think I bought in Dunnes at the time.

I must buy some holdups, I find tights kind of... fall down at the crotch on me, and it's super awkward walking around town unable to yank them up again!

Possibly silly question, can you wear any holdups with a suspender belt, or do you buy ones with a special attachment yoke....?

You can wear them with any suspender belt. :)

Mood, Ann summers do better sizings in hold ups. :) I've never had a problem with theirs, but always have with dunnes!

I know you are looking for alternatives to tights but wolford tights are amazingly comfortable. I never have to rearrange when I am wearing them and they last ages. I find stockings unbelievably fiddly and holdups always roll down. Maybe I should try wolford stockings as well though...

Agreed that Wolford tights are the best! Well worth the price.

Also I find that tights generally only fall/roll down if they're a size too small. So maybe try sizing up?

Wolfords are the business. Without doubt the best tights, stockings type clothing ever. They are more expensive than the average but they are worth it. They last longer for starters so in the long run end up being cost efficient. They look and feel better too.

Where can Wolfords be bought? How much do they normally cost?

    I'm 5' 9", size 10 and always buy size large tights :o

They fit well in the leg/crotch areas, the only part that ever gives me gip is the wasitband. Trial ran a pair of cheap hold-ups today, think this is the solution, although I will invest in good quality stocking as opposed to hold ups for my everyday wear I reckon.

Thanks a million for all the advice ladies, very much appreciated!

BT, Arnotts, they have an outlet store in Kildare Village.

They are normally 30 quid for a basic pair of black opaques... upwards. Worth it though. They really do last well.

I absolutely love tights, always wear them. My favourite ones are the body shaping ones from Penneys- I've bought expensive ones but always go back to the Penneys ones.

They have two types- the waist cinching ones and the body shaping ones- I don't like the waist cinching ones at all though.

The body shaping ones always stay up, give brilliant tummy support, never roll down and are really comfortable. They're a little more expensive than the ordinary Penneys ones but are still really cheap. I've had a few of my pairs for years so they last and wash really well.

Just 2 things about them though- I wear them inside out because they're a little shiny the right way round and I hate shiny black tights. Also, they only come in black or plum colour- I'd love to get a few patterned pairs in that range but not available unfortunately!

I find Pierre Cardin very good.Ultra comfartable and well fitting. Have been using them for about six years.

I much prefer wearing hold-ups myself, as like you, tights are inclined to really irritate me!!

Just make sure you invest in good pairs of hold ups though, because the "stickiness" of say the Penney's and F&F (Tesco) ones just doesn't last. Debenhams probably have the best range quality/price wise :)

Just to clarify, you don't wear suspender belts with hold ups as they have a sticky bit at the top to stick to your thigh. You were a suspender belt with stockings :)

You can wear stockings with any suspender belt; just make sure you get the right size as there's nothing more annoying than wearing the wrong size. I actually finding stockings and suspender belts rather frustrating compared to the hold ups which you can just throw on in two seconds :)

You are lucky. I always have to wear skirts. My boss hates dresses.
