It's days like this I wish my Mazda 6 wasn't an automatic.

Every other day I love being lazy!! Autos are the biz!

At least it's not rear wheel drive like a BMW I suppose.

I did the "bad winter" of 2010 in an automatic (Passat) myself and can't say I had any problems to be honest. This was 200km a day on a half-gritted lane on the M3. Few times it's been icy/snow this year haven't caused any issue either

Just take your time, don't floor it or make any dramatic moves with the wheel and you'll be grand. I watched a taxi/Avensis last week spinning his wheels like mad trying to get out of the estate and getting nowhere fast.

I would recommend having decent tyres though, not part-worn chinese rubbish. I put winters on in November (was only €20 more than the regular set and I needed tyres anyway) and they've paid for themselves several times since.

Glad I didn't take the winters off when it got a bit milder.

M50 at Blanch was the worst part of the journey in - traffic at a standstill at one point, but no real reason for it.

Just hope it fecks off otherwise getting home could be an issue.

    BMW Auto driver..

Unfortunately it's because the Irish motorist in general panics in a bit of the "White Stuff"

Bit of snow/ice = slow to 20km/h and take 5 times as long to make every move OR continue on as if it was a clear summer's day (rare as those are here :))

It took me 25 minutes to get out of my estate one of the "bad" mornings last week because there's a slight hill at the exit and watching all these cars slipping and sliding all over the place ahead of me trying to get out took ages. When I finally got my turn I was straight up in one go (yay for winter tyres).

A few weeks before that I encountered one of the above mentioned dawdlers. Now ok the roads weren't great but again, with a bit of care and cop on I was able to easily get passed them and continue on - they weren't impressed though if the light show in my rear view was any indication. I guess they assumed we should ALL just dawdle along with them - even those of us who came prepared!

....sorry, I must be missing something here.......2cm of snow disables a Mazda 6 ?

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Drove from Clonee to Clontarf this morning in an auto, albeit a DSG, with no issues. Leave it in D for accelerating and then drop it into Sport when slowing down so I don't hardly need to use my brakes.

    ^This.
Never had a bit of drama in the last few snow events in my auto BMW. At the moment my quality branded tyres are still plenty legal but more worn than I would normally have them (thought I'd get the summer out of them in the absence of snow this winter) and the car was very skittish on the N4 outbound this morning.

I'll be shopping around this morning for replacements.

What's wrong with an automatic in the snow? the canadians and americans drive almost nothing but autos and they manage just fine.

Now the RWD E class I drove this morning isn't the best when it gets really bad. But my Volvo was a pleasure in the big freeze and my saab is equally as lovely (though no heated seats ) in this current weather. I can't see how a Mazda 6 would cause too much hassle unless you're revving the bejaysus out of it.

For those who decided to jump down the "its only 2cm of snow". Lads I know this. Learn when to take a joke yeah. Sure I didnt even bother taking it out of drive to play with the gears in tiptronic. No need.

Anyway that aside traffic this morning was stupid on the N3. People really dont get the whole snow thing. There was very very little snow on the road. A bit of slush is about it but it really does freak people out for some reason. Thank god the children are off for the week easing the traffic somewhat.

I remember in the real bad snow a couple of years ago people were actually slowing down approaching the uphill climb from Finglas to the M50. Madness.
