The starter went in our car and got repaired/replaced today. The bill seemed excessive. Before I say how much it was including labour what would be an average price for this to be done? It's a 2002 Ford Mondeo diesel.

New/ 2nd hand unit? How much were you charged?

Excellent username for a saloon Ford thread :D

if you think that bills high, wait for the DMF / Clutch bill, as thats likley the reason why your starter failed.

It's probably down to dust from the DMF. Reconditioned starters were €100 or so. Plus an hour of labour.

168+vat for a recon starter +160 for labour. Or does say recon on the bill. I'll be ringing him today about it. We've used this guy for years and bought the car from him last June but this bill is taking the piss imo.

What's a dmf and is there any preventative maintenance we can do?

€168 + VAT is about the going rate for a new starter.

€160 for labour is very high, we would only be charging €50 or so in labour.

Most of the time starter problems with these are down to a failing dual mass flywheel, the starter itself is very often ok, just needs cleaning.

€160.00 is taking the p!ss a bit its no more than an hours labour to do that job the starter is on the front of the engine its a bit tight but definitly no more than an hour.
