Arts Subjects Question

I was just wondering why it is that you can't study certain subjects with each other?
Restricted Entry Subjects: students should note that they may choose only
ONE from the following traditional Arts subjects: Beginners’ German, Leann an Aistriuchain, Legal Studies, Information Technology, Mathematics and Psychology.

Say if I wanted to study IT and Psychology... Is this saying that I couldn't study those two subjects together? Why is that?

Sadly you won't be able to study the two subjects together. On the prospectus, subjects are divided into a number of groups. You can only take one subject per group to a total of four subjects.
One reason behind it is due to timetabling :)
Also, the subjects within the group listed above, contain restrictions as regards entering second year

IT and Psychology are in different subject groups, as you'll see at the following link: http://www.nuigalway.ie/courses/undergraduate-courses/arts.html

There's also an explanation there of why you can't take both (not as wordy as what I have below ;) ) -
    (1) essentially, if you were allowed to take more than one restricted entry subject, you could be left in a scenario where, say, you didn't make the cut for both of them (because of number of places and the marks you get), and you might end up having to do two subjects you hadn't planned on taking beyond first year.
    (2) There's an added complication if, say, you only passed a subject by compensation (if this idea is new to you, don't worry, as the model I'm talking about is changing as I type!). You would then be left with only one subject to carry on with into Second year, and find yourself having to repeat first year.

The reason isn't pedagogical at all - it's purely logistical, and helps to avoid the scenarios above.

I understand the reason behind not being allowed to do 2 restricted entry subjects but what if you are already in a course and you have to do 3 other art subjects with it in first year. Like Psychology -if you are in the GY104 course can u pick whatever you want? As long as it doesn't clash on the timetable!!

Prob will starting Arts in a few weeks time and will be doing English and History as 2 of my 1st year subjects. Would love to get reading lists prior to starting. Anyone know how to get them before I start?

I did 1st year history in 2007-2008 but from what I gather, the core texts haven't changed. In the first semester, you'll have two different lecturers, one teaching you about World War I and the other teaching about the Easter Rising and Irish Civil War.
Texts were Charles Townshend's Easter 1916 and the Oxford Illustrated History of the First World War

Second semester was on the French Revolution and Napoleon (Owen Connelly's the French Revolution) and the United Irishmen Rebellion. Can't remember what the text was for that class.
