    wondering if someone can help.

bought a canon lbp6020 mono laser printer

went online and downloaded the driver for mac OS10.6 (driver that came on cd was only windows one)

    I'm running a mac with 10.6.8

Driver downloaded fine. And installed fine.

But then when I go into 'sys prefs' and add the printer, it requires that I choose a driver from a list. The 'lbp 6020' is not on that list and I have no idea what to do, as I don't know how to point the computer in the direction of what's been downloaded.

    Result a printer that I can't add

    hopefully someone can help.

    appreciate it if you can.

Is the printer being seen by the Mac ? Check System Profiler under the USB section and see if it's listed as a device there first. On the Canon website there are 2 downloads for MacOS, one is a fix for auto shutdown and the second is the driver. In their descriptions they both talk about the auto shutdown fix but the one labeled Mac-CAPT.... is the driver.

Check system Profiler first and post back what you find.

    thanks for replying ken

yes, the printer is seen by the machine - it's sitting there idle.

when I print to it - it even goes through the process - you can see the doc in the print queue before it disappears and says 'job complete' - prob is the printer does nothing as presumably there's no driver there telling it what to do

I know what you mean about the two downloadable options that come up on the canon site and how they both go on about the 'auto shut down' thing - but I did download the printer driver one - it's called 'Mac_CAPT_V360_uk_EN.dmg'

It downloaded and installed fine and I can see that a bunch of folders have gone into [MacHD] - [Library] - [Printers] - [Canon] but I can't for the life of me make out which one of these things is the driver.

So now, I can see the printer when I go in 'Print and Fax' in system prefs. Then when I go into 'options & supplies' I can choose 'Driver' - unfortunately at that point all I can do is choose other (unsuitable) printer drivers in the 'select printer driver' option - or when I click 'other' in this pane and choose 'mac hd', 'library', 'printers',' canon' I get nowhere.

(As an aside, I just loaded the supplied windows driver onto an old Dell PC here and was up and running in about 30 seconds - after having spent all afternoon faffing around with the old mac and getting nowhere - but at least I can print from something in the house so not the end of the world anyway - would be nice to get the mac up and running now though - at least I know the printer works fine!)

    alfa

If it's just a mono A4 laser, use the generic postscript printer driver, you can't go wrong.

tried that generic option nialler - same result - job appears to go through the process - get's queued and then disappears but of course nothing actually happens.

thanks for the reply in any case

well hey - got it working - not entirely sure how but it's working

i removed the printer completely from the system and then re-added it from scratch - this time I got an option 'other printer' which I hadn't had before.

that gave me the option to choose the lbp 6020 driver from 'local host'

    and it worked - yippeeee

a little bit more roundabout than the pc way, but delighted I'm up and running now and don't have to go emailing canon etc.

thanks again for the replies folks - appreciate them

For years now Mac OS and OS X has shipped with Apple supplied drivers as part of the OS package. These are for HP, Canon, Brother and so on, pretty much anything that connects to a Mac. Unless the printer and its driver were released after 10.6.8 there should have been no need to install a specific printer driver. If there were new Canon drivers, Software Update for 10.6.8 should have picked them up from Apple.

How to install Canon i-sensus LBP 6020 on Mac OS X (tested on 10.6 Snow Leopard):

    1) Download and install latest drivers from official site
    2) Then go to System Preferences -> Print & Fax -> Add (+)
    3) Choose "Default" Tab
    4) Click "More Printers…" -> Choose option "Canon USB…" -> Choose your printer (LBP6020) -> Click "Add"
    5) Click "Add" on "Add Printer" window
    6) Done!

Hope, this will help someone :)
