    qualifying standard of 2:17 and 2:38 by 5th May next year
    selectors may also go on
    4.5.2 Potential to achieve a top 12 finish as an individual;
    4.5.3 Competitive record against other athletes under consideration for selection in the same event with emphasis
    on results in the Irish National, World and European Championships;
    4.5.4 Consistency of performances during the Qualifying Period;
    4.5.5 History of performances at previous selected individual or team events.

    Im assuming these extra cinsiderations are to be used in cases where more than the permitted amount of athlets have reached qualifying standards?

    Pardon my ignorance but what is the significance of top 12?

    Does one have to get the times before the other criteria can be applied?

    I think this is what you are asking:

    If you had a really top runner....e.g. Sonia....who had never run a marathon before, but you believe that if she did run one she could be a leading contender.....then you can send her.

    The significance of twelve.......probably irrelevant in the sense that you only have to believe this can be achieved.

    sorry, meant to post the link

    an Team/Individual(s)selected to compete, will
    be expected to obtain a top 3 (team finish) / top 16 (individualfinish)
    !
    the qualifying standard is a necessary requirement, everything else may be considered

    athletes must also prove their fitness leading up to the championships, and will be subject to an injury assessment

    Perhaps finishing behind the 3 x Kenyans, 3 x Ethiopians, 3 x Eritreans and 3 x Moroccans?

    It's euro criteria though right? However following the influx of African athletes into certain Euro countries you may have a valid point!

    Thanks but the question I am asking is as simple as it looks, why top 12? Why not 10, 15, 50? There may be some very informed analysis that produced 12 or indeed it may be stated policy somewhere that this is what athletes at major champs should be targeting if they are to be sent but it seems a bit waveafingerintheairy to me. Or maybe krusty nailed it with his African influx theory.
