Jerry Collins claims physical threat from gang following Japan arrest
    RugbyDump wrote:
Former All Blacks hardman Jerry Collins has been held by Japanese police since March 17th following his arrest for carrying knives into a department store in Hamamatsu, Japan. It has since emerged that he felt he was under threat from a Brazilian gang.

In a bizarre and unfortunate turn of events, Collins walked into an upmarket department store, laid two 17cm knives down on the counter, and waited for police to arrest him. Over twenty arrived after the first police officer reportedly saw how big Collins was, and called for backup

Had to have a giggle at the bolded part. It's got all the workings of a great action movie....

read the exact number was 30 officers.

    Collins wasn't even resisting arrest.

"Playing in front of crowds of 16 in Japan". I thought the game was bigger there or is that journalist selling the story ?

I'm now wondering if they want Ferris just so they can do a rugby version of Steven Seagal: Lawman.

However my thoughts are with Collins as obviously he needs professional help. hopefully the story is correct and that Collins had no intention of harming anyone but just giving out a cry for help

He's unfortunately quite unlikely to get that help in Japan.

Just going through his wiki and if this is true it is fantastic

In October 2007, following New Zealand's exit from the 2007 Rugby World Cup, Collins was vacationing in Devon when he was spotted by Barnstaple head coach Kevin Squire who invited him to watch it play at the weekend. Much to the club's surprise Collins turned up so they asked if he minded running a coaching session with the junior section. After doing this Kevin Squire thanked Collins and asked if there was anything they could do to repay him, to which Collins replied he just wanted to play rugby. So the following Saturday Collins turned out for the club's 2nd XV match against local side Newton Abbot. In a match a few weeks later for the Barbarians he wore the Barnstaple socks.

Yeah it's true, I remember watching the BaaBaas match. Here's a link to a report about it from the team with Collins in a team photo.

Jerry was a very good AB. When he suddenly lost form and was precipitously dropped, without any real acknowledgement of his contribution to NZ rugby from GH, it left a bit of a sour taste in the mouth, especially for Wellington fans. That story is 100% true, and is typical of Jerry. NZ websites mention gangs in Japan, but I don't know whether that is genuine, or Jerry being unwell. However, he's a top bloke, and hopefully all will work out OK.

Great player in his day but seemed very troubled and had a lot of rubbish off the field in his personal life which appeared to affect him. He hasn't been anywhere near a top class player for a number of years a strong indication of which is his 3 clubs in 4 seasons after leaving NZ.

    Taken from rugbydump

UPDATE: Collins has been released from Custody and fined Y150,000 (NZ$1900)

"The authorities in Japan have accepted that this was a minor indiscretion, and that there were extenuating circumstances for the possession, and that there was neither sinister nor threatening purpose," said his lawyer, Tim Castle, who flew to Japan to oversee his release.

Collins is without a club, for a player with his ability/reputation that isn't a good sign.

I assume his team let him go? That's not the kind of thing either a rugby team or an organisation would take lightly in that neck of the woods.

His team didn't let him go, I don't think. I'm pretty sure his contract runs out March 31st anyway.
