Hi all, I am in the process of applying for a hemp licence. The form says that the farm should not be less than 7 acres however mine is only 4 acres, do you think that they will grant me the licence? The application should also contain a suppliers name, is there a supplier in Eire ? It also says i should apply for a grant to the department of agriculture for a subsidy,Whats that about ?? I plan on processing the hemp myself and using it to insulate my house so i dont need an end processor or transport. Has anybody gone through the application process that can explain it in cavan man terms Thank you

    What's "Cavan man terms" ?? :)

I can't imagine what the minimum requirement of seven acres is about but the fact that four is less than the minimum of seven I'd reckon that could be a problem. I could figure that and I'm a Cavan man.

I'm have considering just planting half an acre without permission and experimenting with the processing and its effectiveness as insulation but I dont fancy going to jail for trying to keep warm in the winter ha

I guess it depends on how you try to keep warm with it? :D

Like everything in ireland, rules aren't always followed. Ring where ever you have to send the licence to and ask them what their take is on your situation.

if you have to ring anyone you shoul dalways play dumb. dont tell them that you plan on doing it, just say you had seen it on the telly and were wondering what was required. even if you have a fair bit of info say you dont and dont mention that you have the form. let them tell you.

say you want to live in a green manner and were looking into ways that your small holding could provide ways to suit your lifestyle choice. flaterly will get you a long way and acting think can get almost as far.

I think it's the end processor is the important bit, ( an approved source)
Harvesting / processing may not be easy, it'll make ****e of most farm equipment .... You know you can buy it by the bag dried and chopped ?

any vietnamese living near you that keep themselves to themselves?! they'd definitely have good growing tips - dont know if they'd be any use with the forms though!

ive got a few trees growing on a farm..well a few hectares... several in fact... but when the current trees are ready for felling im considering growing hemp ...they seem to have over 5,000 applications and grow quickly and with little input...anyone know a forestry owner who is growing hemp??[less then 0.2% THC]...

Is it even possible to grow it here in ireland. What ive read is that this a super plant with many uses and is very easy to grow and it grows really quick.

I know you can get strains with more or less THC but I'm pretty sure I've read as well that the density of the planting affects THC levels, too. So for hemp that you want to use for processing into material, rope, insulation etc. you're supposed to plant much closer together. Not sure where I read that but it could have been in The Emperor Wears no Clothes (interesting book to read and has illustrations and descriptions of some of the machinery once used to process it, too).

I assume there are different strains for different uses , and different climates and growing techniques get different results.
Just because you COULD use it for lots of things doesn't make it economic or sensible to use it for that... a farmer(i think in the uk) was making high grade, cold pressed hemp seed oil for culinary use , (value about 15/20 euro's a litre ) and all a tv presenter wanted to know was could he use it as biofuel value less than 1 euro a litre and add duty/ excise vat ect....

Hey GreatOakTree, how did you acquire the application form? I hope to make this into a building business. It will probably take a good while to sort out all the necessities.
