Anyone planning on heading for the hills over the bank holiday weekend? Thinking of doing a leisurely 80km there-and-back from Maynooth to Sally Gap on Sunday.

    http://www.yr.no/place/Ireland/Leinster/Sally_Gap/

a good website for weather forecasts

    http://www.aaireland.ie/AA/AA-Roadwatch/County-Traffic.aspx?AID=32

The AA roadwatch page for Wicklow, it will have the latest updates on the condition at the Gaps. (at the moment mountain rescue are advising Sally Gap is closed and the Gardai are advising to avoid the Wicklow Gap)

Currently the forecast until the weekend is not not warm enough to melt the snow and ice up there.

    Best of Luck.

Thanks for the heads-up on the conditions, although Sunday is looking Sunny, I'll keep an eye on those forecast sites. Ice spikes haven't got a run out this yet, so may go anyway, just for the whole winter sports buzz: I can come home and have my own apres-piste party, where's my DJ Otzi cd?

That could be a very appropriate choice, but be careful not to end up like the other Otzi.

Depends on what you're on I suppose. Mountain bike would be good but a 4" fat tyre bike would be brill.

    Hello,
I am planning to go in the Wicklow mountains on Sunday if the weather is correct. (around the Kippure)
Last weekend, the wind was so strong in Sally gap.
    (one car in the ditch).

I wouldn't think there would be any significant clearing up there until well into the middle of next week. Friend on the mountain rescue team told me the roads are in a shocking state on the southern side anyway.

I was up near Glenfarne today on four wheels. I wouldn't be up there on two unless I was completely mental, the roads are lethal.

I went up there on 4th of December when I thought it was OK.
The screws in my pelvis feel really nice now no pain.
