Another Starlet question

Just a quick one. Have I got a rare starlet. The reason I'm askin is I'm finding it hard to find an other the same as mine. And I'm Even finding it difficult to find basic parts like a service kit.

It's a 1991 1.3 16v non turbo. 5 speed with full electrics (widows and mirrors) and air con.

When I bought the car from an elderly lady last year, I had big trouble trying to insure it. It kept coming up on there system as a turbo (which it's clearly not). The elderly woman before me had it donkeys years and I highly doubt she went changing the engine. Anyway. After a long and windy road and after having to go into a Toyota dealer and get them to sign a form to say the engine isn't a turbo it's a standard, I finally got insured (take into consideration I'm over 25 with 6 years ncb an I had trouble).

Then I go to service her. All the parts I get are wrong. Finally got everything bar an air filter. Ended up bringing a heap of filters to the desk and having to open them up to find which one was the same (think we found an Opel or Renault or something that was the same fitment)

Now that I go online to search a rough price for my battery. Any website i go to does not have a drop down option for my little car.

So the question is, is this a rare find or is it just an onomally.

Just sounds like its a japanese import.

You sure its not 12 valve?

Are you sure its not just a 4efe engine? Could be written on the cam belt cover?

Re: Battery, get any battery for it once it fits in the battery tray - you wont need big cca figures to crank a 1.3.

Is it a soliel? or a sportif?

I'm not woefully familiar with the early 90's starlets, but no, its not particularly rare, rarer than a std one, and might fetch a slight premium over a boggo one.

Cant understand the service issues though, most toyota oil filters are one and the same, even if theyre not the correct length, they'll usually fit & work.

Is the speedo in km only actually?

i'l bet its a carb'd 4e engine, not a fuel injected version. that'd make the air filter more obscure because there really isn't many about.

i'm fairly sure it's an "049" battery thats used in that car :)

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I'm having similar problems trying to find parts for my Starlet.

I know it's definitely a Japanese import 1992 with bleedin' electric windows. It's due for NCT in February and currently the drivers window is being held up by a stick in the door panel as the motor went. Any idea where I might find a replacement motor? Or anyone got a creative solution??

Also would anyone be able to tell me what model of Starlet it's likely to be or where I can find that information?

    Cheers!

More than likely it's an 80 Series which would have been the 4th generation Starlet. Majority of original Irish ones hadn't a chance in hell of having electric windows so you would be looking for a motor from a Jap import. Not sure if the motor would be interchangeable with other Toyota models of the same age though.

Stripping it down to the motor of something else? Is the motor definitely gone? Not the ratchet/gear mechanism?

Maybe a regulator off a paseo or Cynos might have the bits you need.

Wow...thanks for the quick responses. Yeah apparently it's definitely the motor. The rest of the mechanism seems to be in good shape (according to the mechanic who took it out. I wouldn't have a clue!).

So you reckon the motor from another model of the same age might work?

It'd be the same part as is in a gt-turbo with electric windows. There are loads of these on donedeal.

    just search 'gt-turbo breaking'

I think I've just run into another problem. It seems my mechanic lost or threw out my old motor and mechanism. I've located a motor from a GT in Wexford (thanks for the tip toyotafanboi). What are the chances that the mechanism would also be the same?

You can compare part numbers on toyodiy.com

    Is yours 5 door?

Thanks for your help. I ended up switching it out for a manual winder - works perfectly!
