I have an old trailer that I use as a dump trailer or its just handy to put pallets of fert up on. It was an old silage trailer but the top halfs had rotted away so now just the bottom half is left. Anyway whats left is very good metal.
It was red once upon a time and I want to spray paint it up with vermilion red again now on the wet days when its only fit to stay the shed. Thing is paint now is almost now existant. Its just a rusty colour now. If I keep giving it plenty of the vermilion red over coat will it eventually turn a nice red or should I give it a red undercoat first? It would be handier if I just didnt have to give it the undercoat though.

Grind off all of the surface rust using a grinder with a wirebrush head, prime it and top coat of red shud give a good finish, put up a pic of it if you can!

Does it need shot blasting? Put on a coat of primer first and then put on your top coat.

I've done up a few old machines and TBH if it is worth doing up then the best approach is to shot blast it, prime and then top coat it. You can get some shot blasters who might put on a coat of primer for your with an air gun so that the bare metal is not exposed to the elements for a long period.
