    See the vendors thread sticky.

I suggest you do a bit of research before looking for alloys.

Pick up the phone and ring first. E-mail is the worst way to get anything done.

Maybe, but on their website they have an online form you fill out and they are supposed to get back to you.
I see this nonsense all the time in ireland if I was e mailing the UK I would have a responce within 24 Hrs.

Ritchie in ProParts (google will throw up their number) usually has a good supply of second hand and new alloys in stock

Are you looking for anything in particular?

A good decent set of new 5 spook alloys to fit a 131 golf.

What size are you thinking? Are you looking to use the tyres that came with the car on the new wheels?

I'd go for original wheels on a car that new.

No vw give you nothing for nothing, to but the alloys from vw would cost €1,000.

Well VW give you what you ask them for really, it might cost a bit more but the option is there. Also to be fair, the alloys you're going to get for much less than that price including tyres are going to be awful. I know you want to keep the 15" suited tyres you have right now, but any 15" alloys you get are going to look like the car is rolling on a Bassett's All Sort.

I don't think I could ever spec a new car without alloys. It would need to be as shiny as it possibly could if I was justifying buying it brand new. :D (that may just be me though)

My advice is drive the car on the current tyres the are brand new and if you take them off now you are going to find it hard to shift them on.When it comes time to replace them look out for a decent set of secondhand 16 or 17" oem wheels from a higher spec VW and fit them, then use your current wheesl for winter tyres or a coffee table. :D

Mmm Cant really agree with you there seen lots of cars with 15" alloys I think they look alright, and a lot of manufactures are going back from 16" to 15" rims, plus if you alter the size of your wheel from what came with the car and you are unfortunate to have an accident then you ll end up looking a right tosser im afraid.

I think 15 inch alloys will look a bit silly, I'd be going 16 minimum.

Keep the outside radius of the tyre the same.

What manufacturers are going from 16 to 15" rim?

Trend line seems to be the only golf to have 15s

16 inch wheels come with 205/55/16 tyres which are very common and cheap to get.

id go no lower than 17 inch alloys.

Very true, but I read in an article in motoring independent where manufactures were thinking of making rims standard as 15" on that size of car from 2015 onwards,

would you not be concerned if you were involved in an accident that insurance will not pay up if you altered the size of the rim from original state.

They don't take alloys to be a modification.
Anyway, if you tell them and declare them then what's the problem, or are you trying to dodge it?

They dont if you remain the same size but if you increase in size you must notify them and depending on the company they may or may not allow them.

Where are you getting this from?
Mine said nothing if the sort, they only have to change the premium for proformance mods.
You should always tell them when you're changing something anyway.

I'd be more concerned about warranty.

Sure just get a size that the golf also comes with. There's not really an issue of size problems anyway, as said just tell your insurer, chances are if you don't spend over €500 on them they won't care just like audio equipment. I'd be highly surprised any insurance company wouldn't allow them anyway, the worst that will happen is they may... may charge you a supplement to your premium but I very much doubt that.

I have only ever seen a trend of alloys increasing in size on standard cars, 15" alloys will look mostly terrible on any car that isn't a Micra/500 in size. A Golf is a chunky car, you need a meaty alloy to make it look its best. ;) As I said already any cheap 15" alloys you buy will most likely look terrible. I think you need to expand your horizons slightly to get the car looking its best. :)

Source and why would they be thinking that? 15" is the standard for poverty stricken cars/owners already.

Also for someone so worried about insurance, why are in the Modified Motors forum posting this.. presumably under the impression moving from balloon tyres is a modification?

I can only say what i read, its still there to be seen, there is a lot of changes taking place in manufacturing esp on engines and performance.

As I was'nt too sure I rang my broker to check, I was told i certainly would not be allowed to put 18" alloys on if the car had originally a 15" wheel.

Get a new insurance company, or do it anyway and tell them afterwards.

If the car comes with the option of 16 inch wheels then its not even an issue.

Manufacturers may move away from massive wheels to save on rotational mass and improve fuel economy. 16 vs 15 isn't worth thinking about though.

    so, wait.

you could have spe'd 18" alloys onto your car from the factory, but didn't.

can i ask you, if you spec'd a bigger wheel from the factory would you have informed your insurance? because its the same difference.

also, why buy a new calcutta spec VW? I've always wondered why people would do this? would you not have been happier in something one or two years old with all the trimmings? sorry for the off topic response and no offence :)

Yes i would to be honest, because your moving away from the norm and then insurance companies have no excuse. I have a sister in law that works in a solicitors office and when you hear her stories from dealing with insurance you would not take any chances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

Why on earth would you inform your insurance that your car came with the alloys they did?!

I think you're over thinking these things completely. Would you tell them if you spec'd an upgraded Nav unit or leather interior as well? I mean once you start that stuff, where does it stop? I'd be highly surprised if any insurer would take any notice of those details if you were insuring a brand new car. That's why they ask for the value for it to be insured for, to cover all manner of options that people may have spec'd.

never mind staying on 15" alloys on a new golf because all alloys out there now of that size are awful if you set on getting 15's get the wheels that would of come with it you could get them on ebay for a lot less then 1000 euro they might be reps but they make the car look spec'd up and a car that looks spec'd up looks a lot better then a car thats badly done up
or do what everyone else would do and get 18" audi a5 wheels
