I have about 3000 to spend on a Almera or Mondeo. I have gone mostly for these car's because they seem to me to be a little more reliable then other cars. I'm not an expert on cars so I could be wrong. Could people please tell me which car is the best choice. I was hoping for the 1.5 almera or a 1.6 Mondeo which are a litter harder to find

    cheers...

There was no 1.6 Mondeo from 00 - 07. Smallest engine was 1.8.
    LX had a 110ps 1.8 Duratec engine
Zetec had a 125ps Duratec engine
SCI Ghia had a 130ps Duratec engine

A couple of years ago I had a Mondeo (diesel) and the wife had an Almera.

The (newer) Mondeo ended up a money pit with costly repairs ..injector fuel pumps etc while we never had to spend a penny on the Almera except for routine services.

This might not be typical but just our own experience. The faults I had with the Mondeo seemed to be common for the year and model when I googled same.

So I would recommend you review both models based on year etc online and see if there are any re-occuring issues you should be wary of.

But bottom line, you need a bit of luck with any second hand car.

dont get a 1.6 mondeo, unless you want to be the last car on the road.

the best is a 1.8 zetec mondeo

1.6 is too small for a family car.

you think you will save money on that size engine hauling a 4 door saloon...

These cars are from different classes so there is no direct comparision. A Primera is more in line with comparing to a Mondeo and a Focus is more in line with comparing to an Almera.

In both cars the Fords are light years ahead of the Nissans imo. BTW the Mondeo was only available in 1.6 upto 2000 and then not again until late 2007, inbetween the smallest engine was 1.8 litre.

The Almera isn't as reliable as its dullness would suggest.

We have lots of 8-10 year old Mondeos and Almeras on our books, some have been brilliant for their owners, not costing them anything other than routine servicing and maintenance, others have been utter money pits.

The moral of the story is that you can't buy a 3 grand car on reputation. You need to judge each individual car on its merits.

Don't get this bull regards Almeras being dull and boring, can someone explain how they are dull and boring compared to any other car? I have one and I find it very reliable and nice to drive.

You'd no doubt find an Avensis, basic engined Octavia or a Megane nice to drive too. All are as dull as dung :)

Depends on your definition of "nice to drive" and what you are comparing it to really.

    I don't know about the N16 but N15 definitely isn't dull.
It's not the most exciting car in the segment but it makes you work and it's quite rewarding when driven right.
    Bleedin' rust buckets though.

Both very basic and boring cars.
I'm sure they do a job though

To be fair that generation of Almera/Primera were alot better to drive than the newer generation of either.

Definitely true for the Primera but I'll have to take your word for the Almera, never had any experience with one.
The 00's weren't a good time for Nissan Europe.

A Mazda 3 or a Toyota Corolla would be much better choices. Both are much better cars than those rubbish Almeras.

My friend has a 03 almeara. Failed the nct on inner tie/track rods. They apparently cant be got and the only solution seems to be either replace the steering rack or buy a second hand rack and swap the ends over. He also failed the last time on the front slam panel being corroded. It was costly enough to get fixed iirc and seemed to be a common thing with them

Bought an 01 almera with 50K on the clock
Between 80000 and 100000 miles the thing went wrong.
First the brake callipers started sticking and 3 of them needed replacing over the next 10K.
Then the sensor on the camshaft went.
    Then the boot started leaking.
    Then the clutch went.
    Then the timing chain stretched.
    Then the battery went.
    Then the clutch went.
    Then the oxygen sensor went.
    Then the radio gave up.
Car also went through light bulbs at a phenomenal rate.

I was lucky though - a lot of the almeras had gearbox trouble that I never had.

Oh and i failed the nct in there too and needed a new seatbelt
There are probably a few other things I cant remember.
I would not take an almera again if you paid me.

What is the 1.8 Mondeo sci like? They reliable engine what they like on petrol? How much a 2005 cost Ghia spec roughly?
