set top saorview box- using the usb for video playback

I have a Laurus (Saorview approved) set top box, model LR785-XB, which has the USB slot in the back which I use to record programmes onto a USB drive. I have been trying to play some old 8mm home movies that were transferred to DVD years ago, after transferring them to the usb drive. The set top box will read the various folder but doesn't recognize the file types, (BUP and IFO). How can I convert these file formats to a type that the set top box will play. In the specs for the box it says
    "Video:
H.264(MPEG-4 part 10) main and high profile level 4.1/MPEG-2 MP@HL video decoder "

    Any suggestions?

    thanks

    Mary

I've this box as well. As you say, it only plays MPEG2 which is not really used anymore, so you've to convert your movies to it. I use ffmpeg and it works pretty good.

I don't know a big pile about this whole area but, IFO (information) & their backups (BUP) are not video files. Are there VOB files present?
