Adjustable Stems....

What are people's opinion on these?

I want to be lower on the clip-on aero bars. I am considering replacing what I have on the road bike with one of these so I can lower the handlebar height easily when I attach the clip-ons. Should I bother or should I just swap-out stems before putting on the aero bars?

I put one of those on my road bike. I was having problems getting my position right with the standard stem . The shorter adjustable stem seems to have solved the problem for me. No back or neck pain and I feel comfortable. I have been asked if it makes the bike a bit "twitchy". No, but I'm a leisure cyclist not a racer. I ride up on the bars or hoods most of the time so don't know how it would work for steering at high speeds.

I had one of these in the past (not necessarily the linked model) but I found it would start to creak and need constant attention to keep it tight. Eventually the pivot bolt sheared and I fecked it out.

I cannot comment on the adjustable stem, but my I replaced my 110m with a considerably shorter one for reasons of comfort on longer spins, a revelation , reduced shoulder ache (which was the primary area of pain). I was aware of the shorter stem making it twitchy, but it wasn't very noticeable at all.

That's kind of my concern with them. Any idea how long you had it before it became unbearable?

Any chance of a photo to see how it looks in comparison to the old hb height and the saddle.

    Thanks

Can't remember, the years are just a blur from this end...

I'd say 6-9 months at a wild guess.

Hmmm, I suppose 6 months would do me for the race season! Or I could get a new bike...

The one you linked to has only one bolt holding the thing together. There are other designs that use multiple bolts and I would guess that these would clamp the things more firmly - like this one for instance: link
