Hi. My Dad looking for advice on what to buy. He wants something reliable, cheap to run, low tax etc. Who doesn't??!! I automatically thought Japanese, maybe something like a Micra. Then let his budget determine what year. I'm not really sure what budget we're talking about, I would think about 8k or something like that. So, anyone got any ideas? Obviously I would be going for something low mileage. The car would only be used for short trips around Dublin.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd very much welcome them.

I am driving Toyota Yaris 1 liter and i found it a very great city car. Cheap to tax and very easy on petrol when driving on city roads , especially doing 50km/h on fifth gear.

Micra, Yaris, Fiesta - these come up in all the "small reliable runaround" threads.
Go and see a few and see which one your dad likes the most.

A Daihatsu Sirion is one of the best small cars out there and is great for city driving.

    Sirion or yaris really.
Hyundai i10 or i20 might come in under budget too, both decent yokes.

Subaru justy is the same thing as the sirion.

I am driving a Kia Piacanto.

    i got a 09 for 5k with 49km on the clock.

It takes 45e to fill the tank and i am getting about 400km to a tank. i am only driving around the city centre, and it is brilliant for parking.

It's a fast nippy little car. would recommend

My father had a 2006 1.2 VW fox, great little yolk for the towns and he loved the high driving position
apart from a recall for a sensor never had a issue in the 4 years he had it
think they are going for handy enough money these days

a nearly new Skoda Citigo might be worth considering.
(or VW up! / Seat Mii).

I haven't heard of anyone having reliability issues with these and they should meet the other requirement of being cheap to run.

Powered entirely by electricity, it is small, nippy and great fun to drive. It is capable of up to 80 km* with a range of up to 80 km*, making the REVA ideal for eco-friendly urban and suburban driving. With €31 motor tax, low insurance, easy parking and free on street charging in Ireland, the REVA Electric Car is Ireland’s most affordable electric vehicle.

Ah here, that's not a real car, is it? I think that's just a little too small to be honest. Looks like you could pick it up and put it under your arm.

+1 for city driving. As long as they are well maintained they will go for years and year.

NP, just when you said city car, cheap and OAP, I thought OAP's get free rail and bus travel, so occasional long range might not be a requirement. I don't think you could find a car with lower running costs.
