Running costs of a MK5 Golf GTI vs MK5 GOLF R32

Im looking to buy a new car and I'm wondering if there is much difference in the cost of running the above cars?

I currently drive a mk4 gti and because I get the dart to work, petrol only costs me 100 a month which is pretty reasonable. When I drove to work I was spending 85 euro a week.

I got a quote on a gti for 520 a year fully comp and 438 fully comp on an r32! So insurance works out cheaper on an r32. I know the tax is very expensive but after that how much would it cost to run an r32?

The GTI is not going to be much more in terms of running than your current GTI,servicing fuel consumption etc will be pretty close.

The R32 will cost more to run,the big increases will be in servicing and tax as you say yourself.

Servicing wise you have 2 more plugs and probably 2 or 3 litres more of oil every time, plus you have haldex oil and filter every 20/40k respectively (not that expensive at all)

Petrol consumption wise the are a different beast altogether, you could be talking 50/60 miles less per tank.

You will get people posting saying the GTI is faster etc and a remapped GTI yadda yadda yadda but their is no replacement for displacement and the way the R gives you the power is amazing, the VR engine is one of VW's greats plus the 4wd can't be beaten. Drive one and you will be hooked.

I'd love an R32, but not in Ireland. The tax is bonkers.

In addition to the costs Tossy mentioned above, it's worth remembering you'll get through 4 tyres at a decent clip as opposed to 2. Although that may be offset slightly by the fact you won't be spinning up the fronts at every opportunity.

The rear tyres wear faster on the haldex cars OSI for some reason did so on my Bora and on the S3.The wear rate is probably the same only reversed strangely enough.

As above services will be a little more expensive but with your driving that won't be too often.
    Mpg will be about 25.
Tax is the stand out expense. You will also have to take into account the 4 wheel drive.

The power is different than the gti, kinda a smoother power as there's no turbo. It stays going for a while with no let up :)
    The sound is nice also.
If you can live with the tax I'd always go for the V6
