I was in a garden centre today to price potted laurel. To my surprise there were bags of 40 bare root for 50 euro. That's the exact quantity I need at a very good price BUT I can't plant till the weekend.
Is it too late to be considering bare root ? Especially if I have I leave them a few days ?
Quick reply appreciated as I'm still in the garden centre area ....

You will get away with it till very early April...but you would need to transplant them into a holding pit in the ground asap from the time you buy them.

Keep the root system covered up in some hessian or black bags, and keep the roots wet the second you buy them from the garden centre, then get them home and into a holding pit in the ground asap and water them aswell.

Thanks Paddy. I was wondering alright if I'd get away with that. I've a large area at the back that I use a holding out till the weekend so

    Go and buy them so.:)

Just remember to keep the roots covered up and wet from the garden centre to sticking them into the holding pit.

There's a theory (old gardeners tale) that before christmas for deciduous and after christmas for everygreens. This year especially, you've plenty of time imo before things start growing.

I've planted bareroot laurel before - have to say with slightly mixed results. 100% survived, but they haven't put on the growth I expected. Could be location though, in that perhaps they're just too exposed (and they had the winter of 2010-11 to contend with).
