Tiguan without a doubt. Its a lot more modern and efficient. That said its very plain, like a golf plus.
My other halfs old man has one and its impressive enough.

The rav is a bit long in the tooth and not nearly as charismatic as the older model was.

The Tiguan is far better than the current rav 4 but there is a new model due shortly as far as I know.

New Rav 4 is already available since 14th March.

Has to be said that an enthusiast wouldn't be buying either of them :D

Ha fair enough Colm, maybe enthusiast is the wrong choice of words here so:)

Saw today that the new rav-4 has been reduced in price by 5k over previous one. With a smaller engine and stop start its about 27k for a basic manual 2WD but spec is pretty good.

Would say they will massively increase sales, nicer looking, bigger model with Toyota reliability for decent price.

Are you looking at brand new cars OP?

Yeah Colm, just wondering if anyone has tested either or some solid advice!

Haven't driven the 2013 model rav but its surely worth a look.

Have you driven others in this class too (sportage, ix35 etc)?

Tiguan is pricey once you spec it up.

Haven't tested any yet Colm, wouldn't be too pushed on the ix35

I hear ya. The IX looks ok to me now, didn't like it when I saw it first, looked out of proportion. Def have a look at the sportage though.

Would it be reliable as VW or Toyota though, definitely seems popular at the moment!!

Put it this way. The warranty on the vw is 2 years, its 7 on the Kia, and Kia have been doing this warranty for the last 5 years now and hasn't gone bust.

Vw isn't the paragon of reliability that it was 20 years ago.

    True,true :)
Gonna test this week hopefully, thanks for your input!!

Sorry to correct you Colm the warranty on the Tiguan is 3 years :)

Certainly Toyota is miles ahad of VW for reliability. No comparison. You have 20 tears of rav4 development behind the cars too.

However annoyingly they still only give a 3 year warranty in Ireland, having brought a 5 year one in to Uk 3 years ago.

Ah I see, 'twas 2 years last year.
still a 90,000km warranty is pretty poor.

New Ford Kuga is worth a look at too if Ford price it better than the last one.

Standard Specification on the new Rav looks pretty impressive:
     17” alloys wheels
     LED Daytime running lights
     Front fog lights
     Follow-me-home light system
     Air conditioning
     Bluetooth
 Audio & phone switches on steering wheel
 Front and rear electric windows
     4 speakers
     USB & Aux-in connectors for iPod & MP3
 Tyre pressure warning indicator light
 Easy flat (rear seat folding)
 Tonneau cover & adjustable cargo net
     7 airbags
     Vehicle Stability Control
     Hill-start Assist Control
     Stop & start system (with 2.0 D-4D 125)
     Spare tyre: Temporary type

Not 100% gone on the styling though - looks like it's melted a bit at the front.

I never really got the Tiguan. We've had a couple in here and to me it's just a Golf, that handles worse due to the higher centre of gravity and consumes more fuel (due to weighing more). Does have a quality interior, but haven't been in the New Rav to compare.

Drove an iX35 for the first time a couple of weeks ago and was a bit dissapointed. Engine was lacking, cabin layout is quite poor and the ride was iffy. Steering was very heavy, apart from a bit of play around dead centre, and this one kept wandering off to the left - only 50km on it when I delivered it.

I suspect the Sportage would be similar to drive, but it does look better (IMHO) than the others in the category.

New Kuga starts at nearly €5,500 more than the new Rav starts at!! Specification doesn't look to be any better, so Ford may have to do something on the price of that to sell in any sort of volumes. Previous model Kuga is very nice to drive, although most I've driven would have been 4x4 rather than FWD. Have some new Kuga's arriving tomorrow (with the foot operated tail gate) so will see then if there are any real improvements over the old model.

Think I'd be going for the Toyota, as long as it's decent to drive. Think all the dealers have their demo's since early last week so it should be possible to get a test drive.
