    Is it on this year?

I may stand to be corrected but I believe Swords are not running any open races this year.

Great, the only decent hill finish gone :(

Swords are concentrating on getting their Club League up and running this year. The Swords GP has not been completely ruled out - it's possible that it may be run later in the season

    Thanks Beasty.

Is the plan still to open the league up to non members later in the year?

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

League details are still being finalised. There will be a limit on race numbers, with priority to Club Members. To the extent places remain I anticipate they will be offerered to non-members (a pre-registration system will be operated)

Dunsany GP has a little ramp. Final stage of the Rás Dún na nGall goes up Glengesh, pretty decent hill there. Likewise Newry Stage 3. SERC GP finishes on an uphill, but you've missed the Mick Lally at this point.

I might just join the club to make sure. Can you be a member of two clubs?
    Would that be ok?

I was last year and it caused no problem. One of them was Swords.

Edit: To be a bit clearer...I took part in the Swords league (what little of it there was) but my CI registration was with another club. It didn't matter as I also was a member of Swords.

    Thanks Dermot,

I really enjoyed the few swords races I did last year.

Well if you're looking for hills, this will be the league for you this season, with the main "flat" course (Bog of the Ring) being "decommissioned"

Great, I hate that course. The finish is seroiusly fast with a big group.

So the plan is still take guest riders on a restricted basis? Will guests be approved for the league as a whole, or show up on the night and see how many club members there are (and how many spaces)? And if this isn't decided/public yet, you can tell me to GTFO.

When's your hill climb TT? :D

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Plan is to have separate pre-registration for members and guests closing a couple of days or so ahead of the race - any empty slots will be allocated to guests who will find out if they have one ahead of the race. All subject to change etc. Final details will be published on the club website.

The hill climb is the first race of the season - Ardgillan 17th April - don't anticipate any restrictions on numbers for that one

The provisional calander I saw had bog of the ring still being used?

Latest calendar is up on the website

    Only flattish course is Fieldstown

I presume regular guests will still be expected to marshal?

Have to say I don't agree with the club allowing this unless it's by invite. You're either in the club or your not. It's hard to foster club camaraderie when you don't know who's in the club and who's not. Mind you, I'm also against club members not wearing club gear either during the league or at open races (particularly those who've been a member over a year). Don't take this to mean I'm against non-club members participating in the league, in fact, the presence of non-club members have raised the standard to the point where most of the scratch group were visitors and have helped develop the clubs racing standard.

So club members would have to be invited if they're also members of another club?
As it happens, the other club I was in had an invite to the Swords league anyway.

Dermot paid his subscription to the club (and race fees) so of course he had as much entitlement as any other fee paying member to race in the league. The fact he was also a member of another club is irrelevant imo

On the topic of jerseys, the last thing I will wear in a Club League race is the club jersey (as many regulars around here already know...) - there's no "hiding in the bunch" if you wear something different ;)

I should rephrase that, IMO you should be either a member of Swords CC and no other club (unless perhaps the other club is exclusively focusing on a non-road discipline such as track/mtb). The invite system should apply to individual riders nominated by other clubs rather than the full membership of the other club where there's a reciprocal arrangement with any league his/her club operates (such as the DWCC TT league).

Isn't that sometimes a bad thing?

Just to clarify a few points. The Swords League is for Club Members and invited guests ONLY. All riders will have to pre-register for the league and everyone (Club Members and visitors) will have to assit with marshalling of at least two races.

The visitors list will be drawn up at the next committee meeting on Monday and invitations will be sent out then.

IMO I think it is relevant now that the size of the league has to be controlled.

At least you line out in club colours in open races, so IMO you've done your club a service (unless you appear in pics online as the sole male vet rider in a vets-ladies race, that'd be a disservice:D)

Its hard to keep up the club tradition of chasing down fellow members if you dont know their up the road :D
Only joking im looking forward to the league lot of work has gone in by a few to get it back on track
As far as i know in the past very few guests done any marshalling, for the OP it would be the same few that would be left to to run the swords GP just might be to much for this year

I have been a victim of that club tadition on some of mt few and far between "ggod days"...
Re wearing the club gear in open races, suspect the club would encourage me not to ;)

In my case the other club was work-related(that narrows it down a lot..). I fully participated in Swords, marshaling 4 times in the league, raced twice, went on countless club spins, bought & wore club gear and attended the AGM.
I had to wait until CI renewal time to transfer my licence over to Swords, but that's done now so I'm safe from the motion you're going to bring at the next AGM :D

If you are a fully paid up member of Swordscc, you automatically qualify for participation in the club league.

If you are also a member of another club...thats irrelavant (as far as the league is concerned).

Welcome the the club, it's not quite the clique I make it sound like!

Just to clarify, do you mean, for example, that DWCC (just because you mentioned them in your post) should be given, say, 3 spots in the club league races, and the first 3 DWCC riders to sign up for a race can race, rather than letting any number of DWCC riders race beacuse of a reciprocal arrangement?

(just tring to get a handle on what you mean :))

3 nominated dwcc riders (how dwcc select the nominees would be up to dwcc) rather than any number of dwcc riders.

I am not a swords member, but had completed my marshalling duties for the year when the league was cancelled. On the days I marshalled a number of the other marshalls were not swords members.
