Son's new instrument

    Braved the snow on Friday night to go out and get Josh a new cello as a "well done on your grade 5" time to upgrade from the £99 ebay special.

    this morning it dawned on me.

    I have owned maybe 20 guitars, mandolins, banjos etc (that I didn't build myself)

    in the house, we have an acoustic piano, a digital piano, at least two keyboards, a drum kit, a clarinet, an auto harp and many many other bits of musical kit.

    and his cello is the most expensive musical instrument that an Edwards has ever owned.

    he better practice!!!!

    Sounds like he won't stint on practice and that paternal / familial encouragement won't be lacking. Well done to him for getting this far.

    My favourite of all instruments for pure expressive capability. I wish I'd had the opportunity and I hope he does well and enjoys his music.

    High quality classical instruments will always cost a lot more than guitars and the like though. My friend's violin costs more than all of my gear put together and the total multiplied by two.

    True our violinist spends nearly 100 euro per string on her 'Good' violin, and just rolls her eyes when I moan about the cost of elixirs.

    he playing it loads which is great.

    It often makes me smirk when I hear guitarists whinging about the prices of guitars.

    a grand for a strat?

    dry your eyes!!

    my brother in law spend over 6 grand on a used french horn.

    and it's not as if a load of plumbing is going to improve with age and use like a wooden instrument!
