Any idea what Law points are like this year comparing to last years?

    Hello,

Every year someone asks this question and the answer is always the same: no-one will know until the day the CAO Round One offers come out.

The points are based on demand. Nobody sits down and sets points (it's not that the colleges decide how many points a course is worth). What happens is that everyone who applies for a course is put in a list in order of their points, starting with the highest and working down to the lowest. So, if a course has 200 places, the first 200 people get offers.

The points that are published in the newspapers, prospectuses and the CAO handbook are the points of the last person who got in last year. So going with the above example, the points that you saw for last year are the points of person number 200 on the list.

So, there is absolutely no way of knowing what the points will be. I mean, ok, if a lot more people apply, then chances are it might be higher - but it all depends on the people who apply. If the first 200 people got 600 points, the course will be 600 points - if person 200 gets 350 points, the course will be 350 points.

    Does that help? :)

Yeah just an estimate maybe? Everything went high last year because of the maths but the demand is gone down this year so ..

Just look at the last few years, give yourself a margin of error on that. Disregarding anything major happening, that's as close as anything anyone could tell you.

Here's the lawyerly answer - safe estimate is 600 (or it was back in my days) - factor in whatever extra points you get from higher level maths (25?) and that's your safe estimate - 625. Anything less than maximum points means you have a chance of not getting the course.

It doesn't matter what the points are for a course - always put down your first preference first - that's how our CAO system works. Just aim to do the best you can do and forget about the points.

I got law in Trinity - but it was my 7th choice - and it was exactly that - my 7th preference for a college course.

    When did you get in?
Law is in my blood and I just fell in love with Trinity so yeah it's my 1st preference.
    Well done you.

Entered in 2005 - I believe 535* was the base for our year (on the third round of offers - started at 545*). I met plenty of people who had 590/600 etc. so really - it's about trying to get as many points as you can and then putting down what you want.
