My daughter brought a set of DVDs home from New Zealand as a present for her mother.

They won't work for us – wrong region it seems.

    Is there a workaround?

And if you can't find an unlock code as some dvd players can't be unlocked then there are software options available using your home pc. You will need something like Anydvd installed which essentially takes off the region lock of the dvd when you put it into your pcs dvd drive. Then you can rip the dvd to your pc using whatever software you prefer. Then I would encode the file using handbrake into a more useable file format such as mp4.
