More of a novelty purchase though!
Anyone on here tried this stuff before?

Saw it alright the other day and checked their site. Say the price and then said nope. :)

Meh, marketing mumbo jumbo. Reminds me of those death brand cigarettes from a couple of decades back.
If I want more caffeine I'll have an extra shot of my usual.

Robusta also have a lot more caffeine than arabica...do you see everyone stampeding to get robusta? ( although I probably am a bigger fan of robusta than most other people, I love the classic italian espresso with the thick as hell crema that I am pretty sure is down to the robusta beans in the blend)

Red Flag words from the website: Dark Roast, Organic, and general manly advertising bull****

"Whole beans will last if kept room temperature and dry for around ONE year, but will be OPTIMAL FOR AROUND 3 MONTHS
Ground will just be short of this, this is because the beans have been broken releasing the freshness. ground beans OPTIMAL FOR AROUND 2 MONTHS"

no thanks. Also they discuss arabica Vs robusta at length but don't disclose what is in their blend.

Indeed, as much as double the amount of caffeine. Most coffee companies tend to mix cheap robusta with arabica, there is also good quality robusta, that's the type of robusta that most italian coffee shops use.

Robusta is not a synonym of bad coffee, same as Arabica is not to good coffee. But in general, Arabica is considered to be of higher grade than robusta. However, I wouldnt spend that type of money of coffee like this because like you said I doubt that their coffee would last fresh for so long. If you want strong tasting coffee try torrefacto, cheap and strong (and quite horrible too)

But thick crema is not specific to robusta... you can get a great crema with good fresh arabica beans... I made this video a year ago... can't really get any thicker than this! ;) 100% arabica, beans were roasted the day before

Is that a crema device/filter/yoke on the espresso machine ? In any case, I got a coffee boner...

    Naked portafilter.

Hard to judge crema with beans that haven't degassed.

Might be time to bring back the coffee porn thread. Hadn't used my naked portafilter for an age and on the back of this used it yesterday evening. I quickly was reminded why I'd stopped using it - coffee spray everywhere which is such a pain to clean up. Looks like you don't experience that problem Bohrio?

Donnacha, I still swear by the naked portafilter. If it's spraying something is wrong: grind, distribution, tamp. It really keeps you in the zone.

And I approve of a coffee porn thread.

    Worth a read.

I'll get the spray/mist if I'm half asleep in the morning and the grind is off.

I always go naked. Yes, sometimes things get messy, but that's the discipline: it makes you try harder.

Llatsni is right, when mine sprays is because I did something wrong, either grounded to coarse/thin, not enough pressure when tamping, etc. But if you do it correctly you will be fine. Also important you clean the portafilter properly and you use the right amount of coffee (naked portafilters are triple shots!). But nothing beats watching coffee pour through a naked portafilter (coffee-wise of course)

Yeah, its amazing how fast coffee loses its crema, I might give it a go one day and record shots of freshly roasted coffee and coffee that's a couple of weeks old to see the difference.

I'll certainly do some reading up on this. I'd accept that many of those variables are likely to be going wrong on my side - the biggest crutch in my mastering home espresso has been the fact that filter has now also taken over as my wifes brew of choice along with my own so the silvia just doesn't get the workout time and attention it used to.

Water will find the easiest path through the puck. If it can find a hollow or loosely packed area it will exploit it, causing squirting and ultimately a bad extraction.

If you do get squirting stop the pour and carefully remove the portafilter. You'll probably see small holes through the puck, usually at the sides; these are the culprits. In my experience its down to uneven distribution and/or tamp: the biggest difference I saw here was getting a tamper that fitted the basket nice and snug at the ideal depth, but you can compensate with good technique.

    naked portafilters are triple shots!

Where are you getting this from? Surely it depends on what basket size you are using? The portafilier is irrelavant to this.

@adrian522 I think Bohrio's getting a bit confused because of the common reason to use naked portafilters: to facilitate stupidly big baskets... but of course they work fine with regular sized baskets too. I'm using an 18g double.

I know when I picked up mine I went for the triple as well.
Easier to fit a triple basket in with a naked pf than with a regular.

I use the 18g VST with the naked portafilter, works well, though lately I've not been using the naked PF because I sometimes like to make a double and use half as espresso and the other half as Cappuccino.

Sorry for generalizing, you are right, naked portafilters can be fitted with a double/single size gasket, mine is bigger. I can easily fit 26 gr in it without much effort, and even more. My average shot contains around 24 gr of coffee.

Bottomless portafilters are particularly good for two reasons, first you can fit more coffee than in regular portafilters (of similar dimensions) and second it minimizes contact of the coffee with metal, which is the main reason why you get more crema than with regular portafilters!

Before I bought my naked portafilter I remember doing some research and coming across this site

Pulling a shot this afternoon with the naked portafilter (apologies for the sound). I was trying to nail a really light roasted bean that's a few weeks old now (La Buitrera Huila - Square Mile filter sub)... didn't quite work - I find darker roasts are easier to dial in and give gloopier crema - still, this was tasty :-)
