Sometimes I do especially when they have random stand in's for John Murray who seems to be ''away'' more often than Marion Finucane. Who was the guy on this week ? A comedian I think. Gerry only went to Florida for a month every summer, not 3 but never tired of telling us about it

I liked listening to him and don't really listen to 2fm since he passed. Suppose you could say I miss him/his show

Listen to Howard Stern. That's the guy Gerry looked up to and tried to emulate.

Never missed him to begin with but I was reminded of him this week when I saw the snow.

Best radio presenter ever and #RTE cant fill the gap they have plunged with his untimely death.
Despite his background and revelations try stick to the topic rather than slate him of his personal life.
    Nobody is perfect .

They are two totally different animals in fairness. Gerry Ryan, as far as the irish radio scene was concerned was unique but, was very much enabled to be so because he worked for the national broadcaster. He certainly had the ability to articulate , to connect and had an intellect which engaged the listeners but he was very much indulged from early on by montrose. 2FM when Gerry started off had a captive audience purely becasue they were RTE, and latterly because the pirates were legislated out of existence. Would Gerry have been such a success over such a long period of time if he hadnt worked for RTE ?
Looking at 2FM now, they are a mess and much of this arose because of Gerry's presence on the station. The 'Comin atcha' 2FM of the early 80's was a youth music station with young dj's of which Gerry was only one, but as Gerry aged so did the listeners and the mentality towards 2FM. If Gerry had been moved out of 2FM a decade ago 2FM might still be relevant as youth music station now. Gerry's success ultimately gave rise to 2FM failing as a station in recent years, now without him they are bereft of their star man and ideas. Replacing Gerry, or trying to replace Gerry with inferior presenters like colm hayes simply highlights how flawed 2FM's current model is.

Well I'm glad to see we agree about something. As per the question posed by Andym1, I do believe he has not nor will ever be replaced. The 2fm situation is a totally different discussion entirely.

    .

Yeah, gerry was the main anchor and it's evident of the downfall since his death. He is not replaceable.

And so I get a yellow card for having the tenacity to express a sense of humour on yet another sympathy seeking thread for Ryan.

What a lot of the Gerry fan club members here seem to conveniently forget is how much the late broadcaster loved to have a laugh at the expense of others while he was around. It seems his admirers aren't as willing to take it as he was to dish it out. And dish it he did. His show was the ultimate in tabloid radio in Ireland and he would have no qualms whatsoever in exposing the flaws of others and delve into their personal lives too if it meant boosting his listenership.

I'm genuinely sorry the man is no longer around and I appreciate how much he was admired by thousands, but if asked do I still miss him, I'll always answer like I did above, and if others wish to isolate the hypocrisy surrounding his death from the vulgar journalism he practiced then they're welcome to keep their heads buried in the sand.

Here was a man who took pleasure in exposing the shortcomings of others while indulging in a filthy drug habit himself and protesting vociferously about taking a cut in his own salary at a time when the rest of the country were taking cuts in theirs or losing their jobs.

It amazes me how quickly a lynch mob will gather to call for the head of some politician, priest, sports star or other high profile figures who fall foul of having double standards, but if you dare mention of the sheer hypocrisy and two faced self righteousness that Ryan has been exposed of, you become the demon.

The truth is, whenever I think of Gerry Ryan now, the first image that appears in my head is one of a few lines of white powder and 3 rolled up €50 notes. (About the cost of a TV licence around the time of his death).

The title of this thread asked a question.

    I answered it.

Send me a red card if the truth hurts.

Im sure your point is taken, the moral of the story is ,he was good, and i dont condone what he did in the background, like i said nobody is perfect.

The fact is he was the best and its quite evident since his departure they cant replace him rte tend to use existing staff to fill gaps and its not working.

The only credible replacement would be fanning or maybe boucher hayes.

Fanning is a Jock and boucher Hayes is radio 1 to the core. 2fm will continue to lose listeners as long as their identity remains so vague. This is where Gerry Ryan and 2fm had such simultaneously conflicting fortunes, Ryan's popularity was in spite of 2fm's lack of popularity. A credible replacement would be Darcy but this doesn't address 2fm's core problem which not even Gerry could help with, is 2 FM a youth music station or not?

Darcy has been shedding listeners lately too.

Whatever fm radio has to do with rte needs an overhaul and new presenters.

Targeting certain audiences is not really balanced enough.

ok so we are here to talk about Gerry Ryan's absence from radio. Nothing else. It's a radio forum. Plenty of other forums to discuss other matters. If it steers off topic slightly, the discussion will no longer be able to continue.

I was a big fan in the early years of the show, but had given it up altogether by the end.

    I do miss him.

It's funny, I never really listened to his show years ago and it was only in the few months leading up to his death that I was starting to get really hooked on it.

Discovered he had died while I was in hospital and I remember being so shocked; I had to get the paper to believe it.
He was a great presenter and love him or hate him, he had charisma and knew how to get people talking.

His personal life was nobody's business and none of you would have been any the wiser regarding his alleged drug use if he hadn't have passed away.
    Nobody can replace him.

2FM has gone to the dogs now though. I used to listen to that station every single day, but now I've switched to FM104 and it's miles ahead of the rest.

Well, since nothing much has changed since I started a thread on this subject almost two years ago, yes, I still miss the late great G Ryan.

I miss Gerry's show, although it annoyed me when he ate or drank on-air. The slobbering over the mic turned my stomach sometimes.

I'm the same - I enjoyed the show (warts and all) and his death marked the end of my listening to 2FM and switching to Radio 1 during the morning. Hitting my forties probably had some sway in the matter too, but if he were still alive today, I'd probably still be listening to him.

I miss him, i loved his show. The daily line up now is atrocious.

Breakfast show - Muck savage fm with that idiot from Navan
9-11 - Daily dose of US politics, US presidents, asking people their kids names, and that stupid "tune that name" game every few weeks.
11-1 - Man Utd and talking about 'down the pub' and trying to relate to people from beyond the pale
1-2 - Poor old Larry, getting the names of songs and bands wrong all the time. Let him go home, he must be nearly 90 years old.
2-4.30 - Bruce Springsteen played every day, along with topics of no interest to anyone.
4.30-7 - "its nearly Friday" "only 4 more days til Friday" "Friday is nearly here"

Gerry was never more than slightly late every now and again for his show.

As we have had time for pause and reflection, I now think the evidence is pointing in the other direction.

Gerry in the early days was good, then started to believe he was great and in the end was hard to listen to. yet I would still listen to him over tubridy and darcy

This is not directed at any broadcaster in particular , but it's only when he's gone you realize how unique he was on irish radio . Only close runner for it now is Neil Prenderville

Yeah Seven of Nine was an awesome character... she should have a cameo in the next Star Trek film!

Whether you actually liked Gerry or not, he can't be replaced by any of the current line-up on RTE. I met him once, had a chat with him, I expected a total diva - not a bit of it.

Yea, that's my point, its not to criticize any other presenter they have, he was just so different by Irish radio standards

Yes indeed, Mr. Had every opinion but no opinion of his own! This guy was anything but original. He just agreed with whatever he thought would be the safe bet! I've listened to American radio presenters and the absolute most entertaining and best, are the ones who just say how they feel. I have heard so many women calling in to Gerry's show and he just agreed with them if he thought it would be the safe bet, never listening to both sides of the argument. And the women who used to call into him would know this thus continuing the circle.
I honestly thought Irish people were getting better at seeing this kind of fakeness but I suppose if this is the calibre of Irish radio this is all most people over here know.
