    Hello All,
Intend to install a free standing Clearview Stove in the following opening this summer:
    [IMG][/img]p1020813p.jpg

What we are undecided about is the base of the opening and the surround.
Option #1: Granite / quartz granite base and paint the wall surrounding wall
Option #1: Granite / quartz granite base and 'Thin Stone' the surround
Option #3: As # 2 but also 'Thin Stone' the wall that is painted red in the picture.

Don't have room I think to put conventional 4 - 5 inch stone on the surround wall hence the reason for selecting 'Thin Stone'.

So folks, has anyone pondered a scenario like the above and what have ye done??
I'm partial to the quartz granite and thin stone surround only.....
    Thanks all.

Well for starters the skirting board has to go...as its a fire hazzard

You cant have a combustable material right infront of/underneath a fire/stove.

Replace it with a nice piece of black granite plinth.

Yea Paddy147, Skirting will be gone and a granite or quartz plinth will be installed....... the timber floor already has a 'cut out' for it (exact same as in your picture).
    Thanks for the reply

    Hi Islanderre,
We have an insert stove in a similar opening and have painted the surrounding wall (red in your picture). Because it's an insert, we had to use a fireboard slab and plaster it with a specific heat resistant plaster so it doesn't crack, the plaster is fine 18 month later but the paint has cracked slightly. Might not be as much of a problem with a freestanding stove but may be worth thinking about using thin stone for the lot.

Would you consider slate for the chimney breast? The thin finger tiles, that have a stacked effect. They look fabulous and could make a real statement.

JoJo Ross and Elottois, many thanks for the replies.

I plan on mounting a ECO Fan on the stove to help stop the buid up of heat in the opening so hopefully this will reduce the risk of any plaster cracking.

Elottois, we did consider using slate but came to the conclusion that it may of looked too dark in the opening as we intecd putting in a green enamalled stove.

    Regards,
    Islanderre
