Dont know if a thread has been done on this but a certain female in the army(dont know name off hand)who has not passed her fitness test in 7 years is bringing her case to the european court over the defence forces trying to get rid of her. 1 OR 2 YEARS MAYBE IF SHE HAD AN INJURY BUT 7 SURELY!!! Think its time for the army to weed out these leeches on a free ride and cut them loose from their jobs

Do you have an agenda here OP?
By the way she was in the Naval Service, and she lost her case in the Irish Courts, if she wants to pursue it to the European Court then that is her right.

I too vigorously dislike things that I heard from a third party and cannot confirm.

What are the consequences of dailing the test?

Failing an annual fitness test eliminates your opportunity to undergo military courses, serve overseas or continuation/re engagement of contract.

She hasn't passed for seven years I don't see how she can claim they're trying to get rid of her.

tell u a good 1....... in the defence forces you have any amount of time to train....seen this lady 1 day hoping into her car which is 150 metres to the gym and driving to it instead of walking to it...

It would help if the OP linked an article to all the facts.

I believe there were certain medical reasons for her failing the tests each time. The DF has in some cases discharged people on medical grounds in the past for various reasons. I personally think that failing a test for 7 years is taking the piss. She should have been gone long ago.

Not all units, branches or sections get "any amount of time to train". As a serving member, you know this......that's if you ARE a serving member. If so, take your opinions to the mess or the canner, this is not the place for bashing the DF.

This is exactly the place for that. It's not relagated to people on the dole and in Government, those are just the most talked about.

Well I have no problem with a balanced debate.

7 years is a bit much though.

Our gym opens at 07:00 and closes at 19:00, the vast majority of my training is done in the 90 minutes before I begin work or from 17:00 onwards, maybe the OP is in the south but show me someone with a minute to spare since the re-org and I'll suck farts out of my own arse.

    As for the ongoing case;
Think its time for the army to weed out these leeches on a free ride and cut them loose from their jobs

Isn't that exactly what the DF is trying to do?.. I've known lots of people who have lost their jobs in the DF on medical grounds or because they've failed to pass their LIFE (physical fitness test) but for some reason known only to that girl she feels special.

Whatever about not passing a fitness test in seven years, what's really surprising is that she's 35 and still a private!

    That's Dad's army territory there.

many people have 21 year careers in the defence forces and remain privates, it's not that unusual.

What level would someone typically be in the army at 35? I know 'nought' on the army.

I will ask again OP, do you have a personal agenda here?

Well to get promoted to NCO, corporal and up she would need to do a NCO course. But since she hasnt passed a fitness test in 7 years she wouldnt have been allowed on those courses. Hence, stuck as private.

I was watching the St. Patrick's day parade in Cork city this year and it struck me that a significant percentage of the military personnel were overweight. This seems to be a new development. Surely being reasonably fit should be a minimum requirement for younger personnel at least?

Is it one of those that fits into the Ryanair cabin baggage category, or is it a feckin huge one that needs two people to lift it?

You probably saw the RDF, part timers. Not the real military. Fitness tests for RDF personnel only being introduced next year, hence overweight members are common in the org.

    Semper pie.

Id have thought of all places the df would find a way of dealing with those who dont know how to pipe down, rightly or wrongly, the 'officially' legal way.
such as toilet duty at 5.30, cleaning the horses at 21.00, that kind of thing ...their version of craggy island, somewhere to put their defective units.
surprised shes not on river sentry duty on the aran islands.

    She's right about this:
she said there was "absolutely no equality in the Army".

The fitness tests for females are far easier.

She'd want to cut out the chocolate buns and the whipped scream and get off her hole and do a bit of training. She probably thought the army is going to be piss easy.

    My opinion of your one

Well, unless she had a debilitating injury or medical illness, there's no reason that the woman in question should have failed it for that long tbh. It would take a month or two of a decent standard of training to absolutely ace that test, so there's no reason for her to train in her off-time (unless there's some sort of curfew on her activities).

As praetorian said above, that's just taking the piss.

She boasted of running 10k a day for three days for charity. Thats not impressive in someone who is supposed to be 'military' fit.

And I bet that was without 30 kilos of gear on her back like a squaddie. 10k a day is nothing to the average person.

Just watch, this will turn into one of those "job security" "discrimination at work place" cases. It's the bloody Defence Forces, not a career in IT. If she hasn't passed the fitness test in 7 years, she should not be in the military.

If I remember correctly, the "fitness test" is actually 20 press ups in 60 seconds, 20 sit ups in 60 seconds and running like 2.5km. Females don't have to do the same test, they keep their knees on the ground for press ups and they get an extra 90 seconds or so for the running challenge.

IMO, all members of the military should do the same fitness test regardless of gender but if she has been failing this easier and rather sexist version of the fitness test for 7 years, she's not military fit.

This reminds of the female riot cop in the UK who couldn't do the 'Riot Run'....a 40m charge in full riot gear.

When she was turfed out of the unit she cried discrimination.

Cases like these cast a poor shadow on actual discrimination. Something, from what I've heard and know, isn't a problem in the DF.
