All are very hard on petrol. The 1.5 and 1.6 models are also very underpowered with little or no performance. Some parts are seriously expensive for these cars aswell.

What parts you mean on 1.5 or 1.6?

I know WRX, STI, and other turbo versions can be really dear to keep, as just a set of brakepads + discs might be a bill over 1000 quid.

But in 1.6 I can't think of any parts that would be more expensive than in any other similar car.

Go and price a timing belt with all rollers and tensioner for a 1.6 and come back to me. A kit can't be got so all items must be purchased seperatly.

The big wing on the boot, air scoop on the bonnet and front spot lights make those 1.5/1.6 Impreza's savage heavy on juice. The 1.3 Lancer EVOs are much lighter on fuel unless they are fitted with Lexus lights. :D

Them 1.3 lancers are another car that are as dead as a dodo. They are also not that great on juice but are still cheaper to run than the scooby.

    136 sterling on ebay.
    Not that bad I think.

Break pads all around for my WRX blobeye were about 50eu. No way a set of discs would be 950eu...
I seen people put full brembo conversions for wrx for less then 1000eu...
I drive my scooby daily for almost a year and I did nothing on it. Only break pads, which needed to be changed when I bought it, and service. So the whole "big running costs" are sort out of the arse. It's not bigger then any other such type of car.
I even had brand new shocks prices as 100eu per pop, which I found very reasonable. Shocks for mx5 are more expensive.

1.5 and 1.6 are rubbish, period. Those are heavy on petrol and would be as bad or almost as bad as 2.0 wrx.I am talking about new age 1.5 or 1.6 AWD versions, not classic front wheel drive. When you try to get them moving to a level of wrx, they start drinking like there is no tomorrow.
Other normal 1.6 car will have a lot better mpg, then crapy 1.6 Subaru.

    1.6 is fairly thirsty

I drove a cheap 96 1.6 auto around a few years ago, was getting about 25 mpg but i was putting that down to a very dim witted gearbox, hated that car, prob my least favorite of over 50 cars.

its all about how you drive it. If your going to drive a any 1.6 like your late for mass your not going to even 20 mpg.

Its the cost of petrol that is problem, everything is hard on petrol in that sense even a 1.0L
You get so little for 20 euro. You would expect to put 80 a week in a 1.0L car with low mileage per week

i had a classic WRX years ago and used to get around 250Km to a full tank. also changed the oil and filter every 4000Km's and put 10w 60 castrol RS in it, cost around €60 for 4 litres. Timing belt on it's own was €97 plus vat from the local motor factors

Flat 4's are always slightly heavier that il4 but it depends how you drive it how heavy it is.

In a equal test the subaru will be slightly heavier.

The transmission lossess through the 4x4 system is horrific. It needs the power of a yaris before you move.
