    Hi all;

I got a job offer from Apple and will be moving to Cork in 2 months time. I am currently living in Limerick and been only once to Cork. Where would you advise i should rent a house or room? Id prefer cheaper options on the other hand I would like to cycle to work. Also I assume there are much more social activities to do in Cork comparing to Limerick? Also not sure if there are any Apple employees here but how it is to work in Apple? cons pros?

I will be commuting twice to Limerick starting from September for college so anyone doing car pooling?

    Thanks

    Congrats on the job offer.

I presume you are looking for accommodation close to Apple. IMO I would recommend looking at Shanakiel/Sundays Well area. Only problem with these areas is lack of shops, pubs etc. The city is only about 10-15 mins walk from this area.

Apple is situated in Hollyhill which is atop one of the highest hills in Cork city. Unless you are extremely fit, cycling would not be an option. I think the number 202 bus service stops close to Apple which would open the city centre to renting options.

Some Apple jobs are also located in the city centre. They've offices in Half Moon Street just next to the Crawford Gallery.

You would probably be better off looking at newer / nicer apartments in the city centre. There are regular buses (202) serving apple and they all call at city centre bus stops.

Definitely re-think cycling up there. It's a very steep hill !!

The 202 does indeed stop outside Apple. Get hold of a route timetable, and the options to rent along that route are plenty. Shankiel and Sunday's Well are very close, as is Gurranabraher which depending on the location is either a short ride on the 202 or walking distance as well. There are also car pooling options, but you'd need to be in situ to avail of them.

Whatever you do, DON'T rent in Hollyhill or Knocknaheeney! Although close by, the areas are less than desirable.

South of the Lee, Ballintemple and Ballinlough are nice areas close to town (walking distance) and right on the 202 route too.

Close up town / in town is great for shopping and socialising though.

Cork City Centre is very vibrant and a fantastic spot to shop in. Its also not a bad spot to live.

If commuting in peak hours I wouldn't advise South of the Lee as you would have to go through the city centre. I'm not sure if you'll be working nights but I would check if the 202 bus goes as far as Apple after dark. There have been problems in the past with Hollyhill/Knocknaheeny regarding damage caused to public transport, fire brigades.

It's a tough enough cycle up to the main Apple facility in Holly Hill but a lovely spin, fast down. Actully it's the first half that is the toughest, not bad after that and loads of cycle lanes etc. up around there.

It does. The 202 is based around Apple's business needs.

Isn't everything revolved around Apples business needs :D

Not necessarily, it's a steady gradual climb coming from Shandon Street/Blarney Street/Cathedral Road. Very do-able. Also ok from from Blarney / Ballincollig direction.
Cycling is most definitely an option from any of these areas, it would be much tougher from Blackpool/Farranree side though, but having said that by no means impossible. I'm very much a part-time cyclist and I wouldn't be put off by it.

I do it from the Blackpool side - it's a a bit of a lung burner in the early stages but it levels off nicely and is quite a pleasant spin to the top.

wow, thank you all for your responses!, I really appreciate it. It will be a different experiences for em as I was living in Limerick for the last 5 years and the city is almost dead comparing to other cities.

I can get the bus 202 but yeah would love to cycle to save some money and petrol from the car, might try to give it a go and see what happens:)

I am looking forward to this new experience:D

They don't call it Hollyhill for nothing! I really admire anyone who manages to cycle up, I tried once but didn't have the stamina and ended up pushing my bike all the way up Cathedral Road :D

Anyway, I would second looking at accommodation in the city centre - easier for socialising, nipping into town/cafes etc.

Oh and congrats on the job offer!

If you'd like to rent within walking distance, I'd advise you to invest in a flak jacket or at the very least a stab vest and a good pair of running shoes. :pac: Having the 202 stop right outside gives you a great choice of areas to live along the route. Just get yourself a timetable and as long as you avoid the areas at both ends of the timetable, you'll be fine.
