How did it go chief? I am going to build an indoor one in November, want it to be solar powered though, off the grid and all that, which will be tricky.

What fish did you use? I was thinking goldfish or guppies?

I'm looking at a course with greenfish.ie which do a single day aquaponics course for a 100 quid in Rathmines I think on the 26th of June, they use goldfish and carp. Might be handy if you are interested.

Same goal as me, Aquaponics using renewable off-grid power systems to hopefully make it as green as possible

Wish I could join you Phegasus but moving to Cork in a couple of weeks! The "off the grid" systems I've seen use a 12V battery and only pump water once every 20 minutes or so as they're charged via solar power. I suppose fish like guppies and goldfish are best for this kind of system as they don't need a specially heated tank.

The cheapest ready made system I could see was over €600 from a gardening store here in Dublin so there's a good incentive in learning how to build our own! :-)

Yeah to be honest I would rather build my own just to gain the knowledge of what to do and what not to do!

I'd say a combination of barrel ponics and recycled equipment and freebies and you could rig a system for less than 100 easy, trouble is just sourcing the stuff is all! Let me know how you get on when you get to your winter project though!

Ah shame you can't avail of the course but I think they run them every few months, worth a day trip IMO, alternative Bord Iascaigh Mhara offer aquaculture, fish farming and seaweed growing courses to which are fetac accredited!
