Has anyone any tips when applying for apprenticeships?

I have worked in a butchers since I left school but have always wanted to do an apprenticeship as a plumber or an electrician. I know times are tough for these industries but some jobs do come up for 1st year apprentices and when I apply I don't even get an interview. I got help with my CV and always send a good covering letter relating to the job. I'm starting to think its my age, I'm 24 and have applied for the ESB jobs for the past 3 years. I took practice tests before the aptitudes to prepare so I know I did alright in them. Asking around it seems to be young lads straight out of school that they take on and I was just wondering if that is the case everywhere? I never once got to the interview stage with the ESB.

I sent off an application form and CV to mercury as I was told they were taking people on but didn't get a reply. It's furstrating not even getting an interview and a chance to sell myself to the company.

    Any tips?

    Thanks.

Get looking on FAS etc for beginners electric courses.... dit and fas run a few part time courses. Get one completed and itll increase ur chances of being noticed. Once u got through phase 1 fas can organise every other phase for u even if u were let go.

Also be warned... FAS will break ur heart with there dis organisation and red tape.... U cud be left waiting 4/5/6 months because a box wasnt ticked on paper like.

Having gone through the ESB, they do usually take a lot of school leavers but they definitely do take on older people and usually do like to take on people who've worked with their hands, keep on trying with the ESB and other electrical contractors
