The New Nikon 80-400 AF-S VRII

I posted there recently about the Sigma 150-200 Lens. I am on the look out for something that will give me a good reach but that will not break the bank. Anyway, after a bit of research on both the Sigma 150-500 and 50-500 I have decided against them becuase of focussing issues and only what I would call bad quality assurance. They do not cut the mustard and certainly not on high res full frame cameras like the D800.

I just discovered Nikon have released a new version of their 12 year old 80-400. It was only released this month and as far as I know are only shipping copies now.

Question: Does anyone out there have this lens on their radar? From what I have seen it does look excellent in terms of focussing speed and sharpness throughout the focal range. The one thing I cannot come to terms with though is the price. It is almost double the price of the old version. At $2700 it does seem a bit cheeky for a lens with a minimum aperture of 4.5.

Anyway, if anyone out there has this in their wishlist I would be interested in hearing opinions, thoughts etc.

    Thanks
    Dave
