The engine is solid enough if a bit thirsty and will not win any races. Make sure all the electrics are working and there are no warning lights on the dashboard as these cars have so many sensors that they can light up like a Christmas tree. If you know someone with diagnostic equipment then I recommend getting it scanned for recent faults. Generally petrol 407s are unloved so you should be buying it for small money.

I can't speak for the petrol version as mine is a 2005 1.6HDi. But common things to look out for include the Centre console Display (the one with the clock, temp, radio, clim control display) fading when the car is hot, this is a common issue with the 407's and requires a new display. Watch out for Blown Bulb warnings when you indicate, the grounding in the rear light clusters isn't the best but this is fixed be adding your own earth wire (detailed instructions on this available online). Any ABS/ESP warnings, there is a speed sensor on each wheel and if one is faulty it will show an ABS Error message, iirc it's around 230 euro to get done in a garage but you can buy the sensor and replace yourself, again detailed guides available online.

As with all cars fitted with a DMF check for vibrations through the clutch pedal.

personally i stay aware from French Cars, Peugot, renault, citreon and fiat, i prefer, jap and german cars for reliability. So Mitsubishi, Mazda, Toyota, VW, Audi and so on.

French cars are known for electrical faults and quiet occassionally too, the previous posts to mine even suggest that. i would get it scanned with an OBD Scan Tool to pick up any sensor faults.

best of luck with whatever you choose

OP, you take your chances with any car. French cars have a reputation for poor electrics, I can honestly say that bar adding an earth wire to the rear cluster of my 407 it's given me no electrical issues whatsoever. You'll hear nightmare stories on all makes and models, i'm being put off Mazda 6 diesels on another current thread, i'm also looking at an Audi A4 but threads on them report issues with certain engines.

Best of luck with your decision.
