Just sold car - seems too good to be true?

    Hi guys,

Bit of an unusual post but here goes..

I was selling my old car, got a call today from a prospective buyer who was very eager to come see it as quickly as possible.

He didn't ask many questions over the phone, but I didn't take too much notice figuring he'd have a proper look at the car once he got here.

Anyhow, he came to view the car, took it for a quick spin - literally just a few hundred metres, didn't take it out onto a proper road for a good test drive or anything.

He asked very little questions and handed over the asking price there and then.

Now obviously I was delighted with the quick sale, but at the same time I can't help but feel that this is a little fishy somehow?

He didn't do too much looking around the car, didn't ask many questions and paid the full asking price without haggling.

I've checked the cash and it's all real, no duds, so that's not an issue.

Something just doesn't feel right though?

Is there any scam that could yet be carried out in this scenario that I haven't thought of?

Do you have the log book or did you give it to him?

You signed the log book and posted it yourself right? Or at least still have the log book and are going to post it yourself.

Call him back and give him back his money, the cheek of him :-)

Once you did not give him the logbook and he signed it, happy days.

Did you possibly sell the car stupidly cheap?
Is it a sought after car?
Are you sure the notes are not dodgy?
How much are we talking about what car?

Have the log book in my possession, have his details on it, and will post it first thing to Shannon in the morning :)

Yup, cash is real, even brought it to a local supermarket to have them check it with their UV lights - all legit.

Car wasn't stupidly cheap - about average asking price as far as they go on Done Deal - the car is in excellent condition for it's age however.

Price - we're talking just shy of a grand, so small enough money.

Perhaps I am just being far too cynical!

He's probably a small time dealer who knew what to look for and has someone looking one of them. Once you have his money and your name off the documents there's nothing to worry about. Did you cancel or move your insurance policy?

Unless the guy comes back later and robs the cash, limerick style, I can't see an issue here!

It was probably his first time doing something like that and was nervous.

What was the car? I had a similar experience last year and it caused me grief.

All dependant on the type of car it was though.

Lol, the "anti time waster", he really exists :D

Last time I bought a car, which was recently, I had researched it so much I wanted to just buy it and drive off. It didn't have any of the known issues and I immediately felt it was right*
However, the seller was a great guy and really chatty so I was there well over an hour, just yapping away. Good times.
He even gave me "good luck money". Old custom, but he was younger than me!

    *please don't break now.

We sold a Yaris in similar circumstances a few years ago. Her boyfriend drove it maybe 500m on a straight road, came back and said it was ok. She then asked if we would take 3 grand for it ( advertised for €3250). Perfect job done :D:D.

Still see the car the odd time as they were local, often see it doing circa 140km/h on the N11 :pac:. It must have well over 200,000 miles on it by now it was 140 odd when we sold it in 2008.:)

Why would you post the logbook to yourself?
How is it supposed to end up in Shannon to notify them of the change of ownership?

I've sold 2 cars myself similar where got asking, buyer came out with cash and bought straight away and took there and then, no issue with cash. He would also want to be a tad of a tool to rob the cash back later seeing as you still have the logbook. Things might be bad in the country but if your selling a good popular car at a fair price there's plenty with cash ready and waiting.

My mate sold a Focus ST a few months ago, chap came across the country, sat in it, didn't seem to have a clue about cars in general, let alone this particular model. Started the engine up, it ran, as engines do. That was him happy. No test drive or anything.

Handed over the cash and job done. My mate turned to his mate as they were leaving and said "let get the hell out of here quick!". The easiest sell in history, of a 2.5l petrol that no one wants.

What was the car and how much did you sell it for? If you don't mind telling. Maybe the car was very cheap to the buyer despite it being of roughly average price compared to similar cars.

    ?
You sell a car why would you send the document to yourself?
    Just asking a genuine question.

    cool:

There's your answer. Whatever he wanted the car for, it obviously equates to the money paid. NCT? TAX in date? Tyres good? Service record? If so, and any reassurances from you around service history etc probably made it a no-brainer for him.

I wouldn't worry at all. I've spend more time choosing a kitchen white good.

The cars I have bought second-hand, looking back at it now my mind was made up within the first 30 seconds as to whether I was gonna buy it.

So yea, a deal can be done that quick, the buyer just isn't into foreplay.

Thanks guys, you really put my mind at ease.

Well, it all seems to be legit so far and have the log book sent to shannon since yesterday! :)

FWIW, the car was a 1999 Rover 75. Kinda miss it now, it was a great car! :o

The car type kinda explains it imo. The 75 has its admirers and for anyone who knows them and their faults, they are an absolute steel. Its even possible that the guy had another 75 at home with engine f**ked so loads of spares.
There are a fantastic car imo.
