Ever had any real damage from pot holes?

    Pretty new to driving,

Was driving earlier on and pretty sure the front left wheel is knackered and the rear one can't be much better, I wouldn't say.

Coming along a road (North Strand in Drogheda, towards Greenhills, if anyone is familiar with the area) and drove over a puddle (which was practically unavoidable, as it took up half the lane and there was a car coming in the opposite direction, too).

Must've been a foot deep. My wheel is squealing now and I'm annoyed. Will pop into mechanic tomorrow to take a mooch at it.

So I was just wondering, as an ignorant beginner, I always hear people complaining about pot holes, poor road condition, etc., but I don't really know anyone directly who has actually done damage to their car due to them.

So just thought I'd ask on here, where ye guys would be more experienced and between the lot of ye probably covered every road in Ireland. Has anyone ever done any real/serious/expensive damage to their car due to poor road condition? (and I don't mean you were flooring it coming around a sharp corner and you slid on the road. I'm talking about times when you're driving according to the road conditions)?

    :(

You need to approach it the correct way to make the council liable. They are not liable where a pothole forms unless you can prove a substandard repair previously by them or some other form of negligence.

With the state of the roads, I'm surprised there aren't more claims for broken axles and the like!

Anyway - apart from the roads making ***** of my tracking, no real damage thank God. NCT's due in August, so I'll probably get ot done nearer the time. No point in doing it now, as it'll only go again...

Bought a new tyre on a thursday afternoon... driving to carlow two hours later in poor visibility.Came upon roadworks and some clown directing people onto the hard shoulder. Hit a massive pothole and within a couple of mins I was riding on the rim rather than the brand new tyre!Had to go back to the same garage the next day and get another new tyre!!!!! :(

I'm actually genuinely shocked to see the state of the roads lately in Cork City, I'm more used to seeing potholes out in the country.
Yes I'v hit two nasty one's near Mitchelstown that blew a hole in my tyre and wrecked the tracking.
I hit one by Drakes Pool a few weeks back too but thankfully I was going slow.

Ha! Have you driven down the Ballyhooley Rd lately? The road's literally in bits. AND this is after the council *fixed* it last year (by flinging a bit of tarmac on it). The pavements were nicely done though.. This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. Cork CC are FAR more interested in promoting the Sky Garden...

Lost two wheel rims to potholes. (One of those times involved having to change the wheel in sleety rain, nearly got hypothermia)

****ing council and pot-holes. Down in Athy they decided the main fix for potholes is to fill the hole with loose chippings and pat it with a shovel. 3 council workers that took. Few months later, they need to do it again. So they send 5 council workers to block the road while the throw loose chippings into the holes and pat them with a shovel.

Damaged the alloys and burst the tyres on the passenger side of the car a few years back in New Ross. Took pics of pothole and also the tyres/alloys and sent them to the council and received a letter from them but that was all.

Destroyed 3 alloys wheels so far with pot holes.

Nothing worse and you can forgot about getting any joy out of a claim from the council either.

how are you supposed to approach it the correct way when they never repaired it before.remarkably it was repaired the next day

I had to replace both wheels on my bike two years ago after hitting a pothole in clonakilty. Almost €800 to replace them, I was not a happy camper.

Some would search out a pothole with evidence of a recent previous repair. They would then have an argument claiming poor standard of work by the council. It would be hard to condemn someone for going this route. After all, councils should be responsible for keeping all roads in good condition and back in the 70s, european legislation was introduced that would make the council 100% responsible. The irish governnent though found a way to hide away this legislation and never brought it into irish law. Amazing how they can ignore the european directives that they dont like.

There are no money for councils, expect to see Irish roads become even worse in the next couple of years. :(

Wrecked a tire and cracked an alloy about 10 years ago

No money for roads but money for traffic lights, Quango's and politicians.

Busted the front passenger side tyre in a pothole near Athlone a couple of years ago, wrecked the ABS sensor aswell. Not the worst that could have happened, the car felt like it should have snapped in two

This may not be pothole related but has anyone been using the n40 lately where the new flyovers are going up.? I know it's work in progress but ffs why they can't make a decent temporary repair after digging up the road is beyond me.

They have a policy of removing the top layer in preparation for the new surface but leaving it for weeks on end before finishing the job. The rain today is making it worse. Im sure people who use it regularly understand what im on about.

Roadworks are a complete joke in this country, anyone pass through the castleknock gate at the phoenix park regularly? Absolute monster of a hole thats unavoidable as it sits close to the narrow gates, if im not mistaken they spent 3-4 months doing "road repairs" in the park, and even closed the gate off for some of that period, its a very busy route and no attempt of repairs.

Yep know what you're talking about. Heading west after the Bandon Roundabout was awful for a couple weeks after they took off the top layer. Like hitting a kerb at one point.

Took out two tyres and rims in one hole years ago in Ballincollig. Was pissing rain at the time so the hole was full. In traffic doing maybe 30kph then bang bang, two wheels ant tyres wrecked, tracking gone and a drive all the way into cork city with a back tyre flapping around. Fucks given at this stage were few and far between i can tell you.

Incidentally, my da got so pissed off with potholes on his road that he filled them with some leftover readymix. They never ever gave trouble again!
Illegal i know but i dont think he gave even a gram of fuck!
I've seen the odd readymixed pothole in my travels and i have to say, it is a good job. Might start doing a few..

In the past year- 2 tires, a trailing arm, a few balljoints, struts, a bump stop and obviously tracking.

It looks like I'm trying to write off my car but that's cautious driving.

Anyone ever go to the top of Bloodmill Rd. in Limerick? Mother of f*ck! Breaks my spine driving on it. Was pulling in to let someone come down the road one day and hit one merciful mother of a pothole, full of water so i couldn't see it.

The whole road-infrastructure is fooked. It's caused from a lack of planning and common sense.

A new approach needs to be taken. You can keep repairing (or attempting) to repair potholes, but the feckin water needs to be drained off the roads. Water lodging is the cause. It's pointless going back to 'fill in' potholes, time and time again, until the a new drainage plan is put in place.

    A feckin banana republic.

Blew a tyre and had to have a ball joint replaced on the nearside front after hitting a pothole. Was on a country road stuck behind a tractor and trailer and looking for a spot to overtake so didn't see the pothole till too late, drove on for a bit and everything seemed fine so tried overtaking the tractor when the tyre went. Luckily I was going pretty slow so could stop and pull in to the nearest gateway and put the spare on. Fortunately alloy wasn't damaged.

Wishbone bushings. Twice. Had just got them done & hit a pothole en route to nct and failed on bushings. Also wrecked an alloy. Potholes suck.

and imo they are leaving themselves wide open to claims in those cases. Is there any valid reason to leave a road in that condition?

Cut a tyre once in a bad pothole. At least two of my wheels are slightly bent so they have tubes in them. Just got an estimate for NCT repairs, every bushing is ****ed and the rear shocks are "weak."
