Hi, i'm currently in 6th year in school in Cork and am trying to decide whether to to go to UCC in Cork or UCD in Dublin. People in Cork have said UCC is excellent and a good night life but i would love to know what Dublin is like. I've been living in cork for the last 17 years and really love it here but I would love to know is it worth while going to Dublin for college and getting the proper experience? If any current students could could offer me some thoughts and views it would be much appreciated. Thanks :)

I think you'll find that nightlife is good in pretty much any college. What's more important is choosing which course you want to do and figuring out which college does that course in the way you like.

The course I want to do is Engineering of some sort which is available in both colleges so it's just a matter of choice which college to go for. Most of the people in my school want to go to Dublin too so finding friends to stay in contact with shouldn't be a problem. I'm a big sporting person so that would influence my choice too. I just don't know whether it would be worth while spending more money each year in Dublin when i could get just as good in Cork for less you know?!!

If nightlife/college experience matters then Dublin is the best option available by a country mile. Dozens of different nights/nightclubs/events/gigs on the whole time.

I've studied in both colleges as an undergrad, and in my opinion UCD is far better! Like you, I was from cork, so going to UCC didn't bring me much new experiences...I knew the city, knew a lot of people. I'm finding Dublin far better for being a student.

Another thing to bear in mind is that UCD uses semesters, so you'll have two blocks 12 week modules (there might be one or two that run the full year), with exams for the first block before Christmas and exams for the second block in the start of May. So basically, you'll have your marks and grades got for half the year by Christmas, and won't have to worry about it any more. If you do fail an exam, you can repeat it during the next semester. If you faul the repeat, you can retake the module concurrently while continuing into your next year. In UCC all repeats are in August and if you fail those you can't progress to the next year.

It is more expensive in Dublin, particularly if you live on campus. But, it's better to have the experience now rather than sitting in a job when you're 39 having regrets! If you'd like any more info, pm me!
