Do you ever have a conversation with yourself when you are alone? Actually speaking out aloud, asking and answering questions etc.

Not so much now that I'm married but when I lived alone I used to have full blown conversations with myself.

Talking to yourself makes more sense than talking to God ;)

I do it the whole time when reasoning through problems.

My mother is always doing that, out loud. I once walked past my brother's bedroom door to hear him having a full-blown conversation with himself, out loud. I don't but I have conversations with friends, family in my head. I'm still having hourly conversations with an old girlfriend who dumped me about 11 years ago. Everyday for the last 11 years.

    Must be a genetic thing.

    Yes.

I've made an effort to stop doing it outside my house. I'm sure my work colleagues were getting freaked out by the guy in the toilet cubicle next to them repeatedly whispering "no, go fcuk yourself"

No but I have rows with my wife....when she's not there. Just things I would like to say but don't as i know they'd cause a row. Yeah stupid, I know.

Sometimes, when working out mini scripts or responses for sales pitches - with both roles, client and supplier - not the exact same, but similar.

I sometimes pretend I'm the guy in the bathtub from the Commitments.

    But I don't have a bathtub

Yep, when working and I'm trying to word something in just the right way and I also partake in full-blown converstions with myself only when I know there's an upcoming dispute/argument and I want to practice manoeuvering my foe into a verbal cul-de-sac and deliver that killer verbal blow...eh, 100% of the time those masterplans fail after less than a second in reality.

OK i wasn't aware that i had to, i apologise and from now on i will always give my opinion and contribute to the thread.

I think most people do talk to themselves, but i cant prove it hence why i ask this question.

Having a conversation with yourself is great practice for say, interviews or any social situation really.

Good man, stick up for yourself. It's the weak little sad people like you that always get picked on just because your sad and pathetic is no reason to pick on you. I would never pick on a little boring obnoxious person like you even though everyone else does. I rather go after those that think they're funny and amusing and interesting, which you clearly aren't. Are you listening backwardsman?????

Would maybe go a little bit further than cursing. Like "Oh FFS, thats fúckin typical isnt it. I knew that would happen. B@stard!"
But I wouldnt have a full blown conversation with myself. I think I stop before it gets weird. At least thats what I tell myself.

that was Tom Green wasn't it?

I asked myself. loudly, in a deep baritone voice... unabashed and I knew the answer, so what was the point.

Yeah sometimes, not out loud though. I can't be having Colm Meaney showing up demanding to know who's in here with me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

Rarely out loud, but yeah. Do deaf people do the same thing - what do their conversations sound like if they've been deaf since birth?

All the time, especially when I'm trying to reason out a problem or something like that. If it's something tricky I usually visualise the information in front of me and use my hands to scroll through it and move bits and pieces around like it's a big puzzle.

"So if that means this, then that goes over there with that, and that means this follows on over here and ties in with that and this guy here fits on with that guy there after they did that thing because of what happened over here at that time which led to what these guys did over here afterwards and if you factor in what happened over here then that means that it was Professor Plum in the kitchen with the candlestick!" - all while waving your hands about in front of you like a pantomime wizard.

    Logic games are fun :)

Yes, especially when I am pissed off, it's usually a conversation that is filled woth expletives and name calling if I am pissed off with someone.
