    Hello guys just wanted to ask a question.

    About 2 months ago, a friend of ours emigrated and left a car here to sell. It had no NCT. My sister's boyfriend asked us to keep it for him until he got paid, which we did. He asked if it would pass an NCT, my husband said he did not know but there didn't appear to be anything wrong with the car as our friend was driving it up to the date he left. We told him to bring any mechanic or anyone with him if he wanted to look at it.

    He arrived up with 2 friends and they took it for a drive. He was happy with it, paid €600 for it, and booked it in for an NCT. It failed on minor things that he got fixed. Since that, he has been driving the car, and now the clutch is going, which obviously means he won't get his NCT cert. His father is threatening to bring it back up here to us and return it (or as he politely put it "wrap it around that ****ing con man's neck") or to issue us with the bill for repairing the clutch. He has said he will "take it all the way" to get the money back (not that it had anything to do with him in the first place).

    Surely to god he doesn't have any right to do that? The car was sold as seen on behalf of someone else. What do I do if we do receive the bill?

    Is the car in yours or your husbands name? If its not then you have nothing to worry about.

    €600 car, bought and sold without warranty. Pretty much the end of the story there and then.

    A clutch would reasonably be regarded as 'a consumable'. There is no expectation it will last the life of the car. Clutch life is also very dependent on driving style which of course the seller of the car has no control over.

    on a non legal point a slipping clutch is fairly easy to detect so a case of caveat emptor...what did he want for 600 yo yos anyway..a bugatti veyron?
