    The IS and Altezza were the same car but had some substantial differences underneath, visually they were nearly identical except for badges and trim. The IS was sold in Europe/US and came in the form of the IS200 and IS300. The IS200 having a 2.0 litre straight six VVTi engine and the IS300 having a 3.0 litre straight six VVTi engine, all versions were rear wheel drive.

    The Altezza was sold in Japan only as the Lexus brand was not sold in Japan until later, it came with the same engines as the IS but was also available with a Yamaha Beams developed 2.0 litre 4 cylinder engine producing 210bhp.

    The IS200 is well known for not being very powerful or being that fuel efficient, the rare IS300 even less so. The Yamaha Beams Altezza would not be great on fuel either but at least it was quicker than the other versions.

    Sorry to hijack, I have a cousin just about to sell his Altezza if you are interested.

    I hope you're not planning on going "diffin" on the public road. We have enough trouble caused by idiots "diffin" on the public road and rallying getting blamed. I've spent hours trying to fix the damage caused to rallying by these idiots......

    As for using the Altezza/IS for drifting competitions (as opposed to just doing "rings" - any idsiot can do that!), forget it. I'm informed that the rear subframe can flex under sideways load, meaning shocking feedback and difficulty in controlling the drift.

    The altezza is the one to go for if all you want is something to do donuts in but you can be sure that every altezza in the land has had the ****e diffed out if it at this stage. There are very few, if any, decent ones left, they're all ropey loose dogs that have been abused since they were imported. Unless your getting one for peanuts then your buying trouble.

    impreza's are 4wd so are they not pretty much impossible to diff?

    Google videos of Colin McRae and watch the results to find your answer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 414 ✭✭Fuh Q

    Yes you can, but its not advisable. The early models would allow the oil to sit to one side as you go round and round causing oil starvation and bearing failure in the engine. I think the later models had a better sump to help prevent this.
    Either way its not good for the car.

    also is the mutsubishi lancer a rwd? and what about the subaru

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,655 ✭✭✭b318isp

    Altezza = RWD
    Lancer = FWD, unless evo
    Impreza = FWD, unless WRX

    What is "diffin"? :confused:

    Got to love Urban Dictionary :P

    Diffing
    When a group of knob heads gather to wreck their cars by spinning around in circles, usually done by joy riders from west belfast and little boys who think twin (tin) cams and old beemers as old as the hills are cool

    Seriously man, you have at least three threads out there all relating to mainly the same idea, Lexii, Subaru's and ''diffin'' whatever that is....

    It might be easier to keep it all to the one thread. :)

    A for buying a jacket, try donedeal or adverts maybe.

    Diffin'??? Come on, you could teach a monkey how to diff a Lada.

    Of your list though, only an Altezza RS200 or an IS200 sport could do rings out of the box as they are the only ones which came from the factory with limited slip diffs.

    for instance in mcrae's time clutch was needed to change gear and to put the car in gear by taking one hand of steering wheel due to manual gearbox, now for instance clutch aint needed and its just a push pull lever right behind steering wheel, means both hands can be left on wheel

    I read that wrong initially so here is the amended version:

    Rallying is easier now alright with sequential gearboxes, but all of the cars still have a clutch and its used on take off from standing starts. However once the car is actually moving the car does the clutching for you as having to do it manually would negate any time saving achieved by the sequential gearbox and flappy paddle gearshift (The could change gears in fractions of a second) But the flappy paddles are now gone from WRC cars too so its back to the stick.

    The reason you can see rally Impreza has more to do with the active centre differential fitted to the rally car which allows the driver to set the bias in the 4wd system. There is a form if adjustable differential in the Impreza RA model but diffing with it turned fully back will damage the system. You could also pull ye 4wd fuse but again you can do damage to the centre diff.

    When you've half a million worth of a rallycar you can diff all you like but the standard road imprezas aren't usually known for diffing. Good for a bit of 4 wheel drift alright if you have the right conditions.

    One class thing about a decent power 4wd is a proper full on launch.

    Car sits up, all 4 wheels spinning, it sits there for a second like its defying physics then shoots off like a scalded cat

    Yes but its unreal hardship on the clutch and every mechanical part connecting it to the ground..

    I've been informed you don't need an LSD to diff.

    Either way, learn to drift!

    Eh, well you cant really, you can just get up speed and turn fast and make it spin.. but you cant maintain speed with a 1-tyre-fire:

    No LSD IS200

    LSD'ed 3 Series

    You will notice that despite the fact he is in an Automatic, he still isnt all over the place in a mess like the IS200.

    Also, BMW claim they plan to "crush" the drifting record by drifting in a stock car for 65km.. I think the last record was done in an AMG C-Class Merc:

    All M and CSi cars have LSDs obviously.
