Hi, my Dad is having trouble starting the car. It's a 03 Ford Mondeo Estate.

For the last few starts, when the key is turned there is a clicking noise but the car won't start.

He had the battery checked last week and was told it was fine.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    Starter motor is probobly knackered.

If its a diesel chances are the flywheel is breaking up and swarf is clogging up the starter you would need to get that checked before replacing the starter.

Thanks for the reply. It's a petrol engine. It has been clicking for a few days. He recharged the battery today just to be sure that wasn't the problem and now it won't start at all.

    Is it expensive to fix?

Depends what you call expensive :-) a recon starter would be about two hundred euro plus labour anywhere between fifty and s hundred euro depending where you go.

Thanks a million for the reply. That's fairly expensive!

Starters or flywheels dont give bother with these usually. Are the lights working or do they seem dull? Can you check and see if the clamps are tight on the battery terminals. It may a loose wire on the starter or even a faulty starter itself. I'd double check the battery first before you start venturing out. Is it not clicking at all now?

    Thanks Plug.

The lights are working and seem fine. There is no clicking noise at all now.

The battery is back on the charger now.

It was brought to the motor factors on Saturday to check it was ok and they said it was fine.

Try for loose connections down at the starter. Double check that.

Sorry to be daft - but where can I see that when the bonnet is up?

Dad used a portable jump starter on the car and it started.

Drove it for about three miles, stopped and restarted it fine.

    Could it be the battery?

Yeap. Maybe a dodgy battery tester they were using.

    Thanks for the reply.

It seems to be intermittent. Tried to start it again and it clicked and didn't start. Tried again and it started fine twice.

    Not sure what to do!

As i said it sounds like a starter.

But I think you need to get it diagnosed properly you will only end up going round in circles here.

Thanks. I think you are right.

It's just the mechanic we normally go to is away at the moment.

    Hi, you were right!

It was the starter. The mechanic had it reconditioned. Cost was €270 including labour.
