    Italian Sprinter has passed away - aged 60. No cause of death yet given

    According to Renato he died after a long battle with cancer.

    For those you do not remember (or were not born) Mennea was 1980 Moscow Olympic 200 meter champion and 200m world record holder for 17 years, only surpassed by Michael Johnson, who held the record until Bolt's Beijing run.

    I was only a kid when he set that record but it was electrifying!! He was my Mother's second favourite athlete after Eamonn Coughlan who she lived near when he was a young lad.
