    hi i've just bought a grand picasso vtr+ 1.6hdi manual 09
there is a knocking noise in the engine which at first thought was injectors
now my mechanic reckons its a timing chain in the engine behind the timing belt
he has got this info from a citroen engineer
anybody experienced this before or has any other theories ?
my head is gone as i only bought the car in the uk and have no warranty
any help appreciated as my mechanic says it could cost 1500 to fix

If it will cost that much to fix then I suggest you take it to another mechanic or two for opinions, pref a Citroen indy or dealer.
You never know, it might be something easy to fix.

brought it in to main citroen dealer so they reckon an injector is shot so they are reconditioning it and should be good to go , fingers crossed

 The cam chain and tensioner from citroen costs around €100 so €1400 for around 10 hrs work is more than a main dealer charges...
maybe this price included a t-belt kit..?

In your case it paid to get a second option..:)

yes i had a quote from citroen dealers for 1500 sterling and €800 from irish citroen dealer too and that price was doing the timing belt kit too

Hope to be back on the road on wednesday at last

So what did the problem turn out to be? Injector or chain?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭cavan4sam

garage called me yesterday and said its not injectors as they had them tested
so their mechanics think its internal
they are stripping the head 2moro so either way i'll know if its timing chain or perhaps tappets as the mechanic thinks it might be
either way my head is fried and mrs is not happy :(

new engine supplied and fitted gonna cost at least 1500

    That's awful news.

Is there anything more you could have done in the UK to protect yourself? Did the car have a fsh for example? Data check for clocking?

    just an update

new engine required which i have sourced with 34000 miles on it

the breakers yard are fitting it and giving a 3 month warranty which is ironic as the car came with no warranty !!!!

the company i have bought it off have agreed to pay for supply and fit(after i forwarded a lot of information from the eccireland.ie site which stated my rights as a consumer regardless of warranty or not , a lot of very usefull info on that site ) which is just over €1700 which leads me to believe they knew something was wrong with it in the first place
anyway by mid next week i should be back on the road again (hopefully)

all in all it has been very stressfull and i'm not sure i have confidence in the car now will most likely put it on the market in a few months time and head for england to try all over again

whats the story with registering the new engine in it now ? anyone any info on this

Bad to hear about your problems. Do you know what engine oil service intervals the car has had before the big end failure?
If I can advise something here is keep the oil change intervals short - best 10k km but no longer than 1 year. Also avoid driving in high gears with engine revving below 1.8-2k rpm - crankshafts in some engines hate that.
Good luck with the new engine.

    finally back on the road

new engine with 32k miles on it
new turbo (old one was near end of life )

and a humongous pain in the ass and a hole in my pocket to the tune of around a grand (the guy i bought it off paid £1500 towards repairs )

heres hoping for trouble free motoring from now on

8 months later do you still have the car and any more problems? Looking at getting a Grand Picasso, need the extra seats :0 Also did you get the manual or semi-automatic?

From what I know about the 1.6 HDI engines in post 2007 citroens and peugeots it that it is sensitive to oil quality and therefore running a car on long service intervals is not advisable. There was a time when car makers where recommending 30k km service intervals and that is the period when most of the engine/turbo damaged motors of this time come from. Since then, I think, they reduced the service intervals on this cars to 15k km. If anything not only look for a car with full service history but watch out for long service intervals. If the car was run longer than 15k km or 1 year on the same oil I would walk away. Going forward, if you get this particular car, make sure you change the oil every 10k km or 1 year whichever comes sooner and the moment you get it get the mechanic to clean or better replace oil supply and drain lines to and from the turbo. Turbos on this cars can go too and simple replacement of them without doing anything to the lubrication system around makes no sense as the turbo, starved of oil, will go again.
