Dead PS3, but is it worth replacing?

    Heya,

I have a problem! I have a phat model PS3 that's served me well for the past 5 or so years. With no warning on Tuesday night the console shut itself off and now it only stays on for 10 minutes max before switching off again, the flashing red light I've since discovered means it's overheating constantly.

I'm pretty sure the console is dying (HD is still good though) but after 5 years it really doesn't owe me anything at this stage so I'm not too annoyed. I've not exhausted options for fixing it yet too.

Anyway, I'm wondering... Considering it would cost 2-300 euro to replace it and the PS4 is due this Christmas is it really worth buying a console when an upgrade is due in the next year. Any ideas?

Get a pre owned ps3 from a shop (usually 12 month warraty) and sell the components of your old one.

There is a market for old components like the blu ray player etc. Do some research on it. Some repairers may give you a bit of cash for the old one.

Okay its not loads but the reduced unit cost of the preowned machine will mean a much smaller outlay.

Then if you splurge on a new console its not after spending loads previously

pre owned ps3 in gamestop only come with 3 months warranty. ps4 wont be released here util this time next year, not released for Christmas, can't believe Sony are gona miss the Christmas rush here with that. sell the parts or try an make something cool out of the casing. i'm thinking of putting a light or sorts in my casing an letting it shine out through the holes in the casing.just for the craic. take out your disc while you have the chance and get all your save data onto an external hard drive or if your on playstation plus your grand.

I rang Sony, they said go to your nearest gamestop and get a console for something like E100 with "this code". went to gamestop only to be told that the console was a refurbished one and you only get 3 months warranty. rang Sony back to be told that your only entitled to a refurb, not a new one and the warranty was set by the retailer. sickening!!! That's what they think of you. sell you a crap built console to get more money from you.

3 month warranty with a pre-owned machine seems reasonable.

we shouldn't have to be buying a refurbished anything! too many things these days are built to break.built with crap but still charging a fortune.consoles, phones whatever.I have a bloody ps1 and an old master system that still works no probs. everything's just made for to get more from you. no way i'm buying a ps4 initally, their will be something with that also.

Very unusual for 12mth warranty with 2nd hand item, Hallo Dare sounds about right 90 days or so.

The fact that the EMEA launch for the PS4 will likely be in 2014 kinda has me thinking I should get a refurb to tide me over.

Also I think you're right hallo Dare, the smart move is to wait for the Rev A models of the PS4 and to wait for a decent games library to build up.

My biggest problem now is getting the save data from a machine that only stays on for 10 minutes before overheating. It might not even be possible.

if you could manage for another year get a temp fix..reball or something..check out consolepro's if you are in Dublin...they'll reball and give you a 1 year warranty for €100..better than a new console..

for me to get my save data I stripped the board from the casing and put it outside on the window while it done the job.kept it cool the while time while I transfered all the data to the new console.wouldn't try it outside today mind!.haha

My ps3 died on me months ago too. Also a phat model. I was quoted mental amounts to fix it (€80-120)

I figured just screw it. Buy another one when they become cheap. PS4 is coming out this year so i reckon they'll be a decent price in a few months.

I say do the same op.

Nope. Hunter was right. Picked up a 2nd hand slim at weekend with 12mth warranty, same as the warranty they offer with a new one.

Without. 250Gb for €220. Was looking at a 120 the week before for €200. Didn't want to fork out 300+ for a new super slim and only 1 yr warranty as well

Ouch! You can get a new 500GB PS3 for €249.99 on gamestop website. An extra €30 would of been worth it to get it brand new.

You could just fix it yourself for under a tenner, it's not that difficult and can be done in under an hour if you know what you're at.

Same thing has happened to me.

I have Battlefield 3 and premium and all that. What will happen to BF when I get a new PS3 (there were loads of extra maps saved, the total save is around 10gs)

Your download history will be stored in the PSStore. When you log in with your existing account all your purchases will be available for download. You might need to obtain a new online pass for the basic game.

You should buy a new or refurb one, even though next-gen is around the corner, it won't be worth buying next-gen at launch, still some great games coming out.

Even most of next-gen more exciting games will be released for current-gen, like watchdogs and destiny, prob just a bit less shiny!
