NCT - Eroded VIN number

Hi, so last week went to NCT and the car did not pass due to VIN number not visible. The tester told me that there's probably rust in it and once I get it fixed I can come back anytime and get it tested again w/o charge before the 11th of April.

Got the car serviced to check for the rust and apparently the VIN number is eroded pretty badly and he told me to go back to the NCT center to get a form then go to Garda station and get the form stamped or something. But does anyone have more information on this? I am asking since it was a bit vague and I can't seem to find any information on this on the NCT website like do I need to bring any documents to the NCT center and the Garda station?

    Thank you.

yeah u can go to the nct center, ask them for the form. bring the form and car to the garda station, they will do a check on the reg to make sure its not stolen and will also have a look at the chassis number. basically they state that there is no reason to suggest this car is not legitimate. they'll sign the form. u bring it to nct center, they will photo copy it and hold onto the photocopy, and issue you with your cert. you hold onto the original for future ncts as this problem will crop up every test. is it a ssang yong by any chance??

chassis number should be stamped on the body.

no sh!t sherlock, but if you read the post, you note he says it rusted, on the body of the vehicle.

Had a jeep once with a different vin number stamped on the chassis to the log book, there was another different (to chassis and log book) vin number on the rest of the jeep, owner had just bought it privately.

I think your point was that when main VIN number on the body is corroded, NCT guys should use the one on the windscreen to identify the car.

nct_tester's point was that VIN on the windscreen is worth nothing, and without proper VIN stamped on the body, they can not pass the car through the test - which seems reasonable.

not entirely, I see lots of nct testers using the bottom of the screen chassis no? Its probably not what they should be d0ing, but they do it.

I would've thought they should be checking all VINs and confirming that they match. If they don't match it's a cut 'n' shut, and that's a safety issue, and the NCT is 100% about safety, right?

Vin number is meant to be checked from the stamped chassis number anyway. Lads can check from the window if they choose to, but at the end of the day, if theres a problem with that car further down the line, it'll be their name on the test report. I've seen chassis numbers being 1 digit out but that's more than likely down to clerical error and is normally picked up during the cars 1st nct.
