Too late to renew 1st provisional?

I got my first provisional license in May 2007 and it expired in May 2009 (so almost 4 years ago), does anyone know if it's too late to have it renewed or will I have to sit my theory test again and go through the new learners' system? I think as long as it didn't expire more than 5 years ago I should be able to just send off a renewal form but I'm not too sure. Also, if I can renew it will I be issued with a second provisional license or a second leaners permit?

No it's not too late. You'll be issued with your second learners permit, it'll be the new style card and will cost you €35.

A learner permit is generally issued for two years and costs €35. No fee will apply where the applicant is 70 years of age or more on the commencement date of the licence.
Note: you will be treated as a first-time applicant in relation to a particular vehicle category if you have not held a learner permit in that category within the preceding five years.
    Taken from here.

I was told that I had five years to renew my license once it expired. This was my second provisional though. But as long as I renewed it within the five years I wouldn't have to resit the theory or take the twelve lessons. It will be a permit you're given but the rules re the twelve lessons remain the same as you were originally issued your licence before it came in.

Thanks everyone, so I won't have to sit my theory test again :) But because I'll be issued with a second learners permit does that mean I'll still have to complete my 12 lessons and log book before I can take my test?
