Garmin Edge 500 GPS signal

    Hi folks,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced problems with their Garmin edge 500? I was using it on Monday & for no reason it lost signal & auto paused (which I had it set to when stopped). It wasn't especially cloudy nor was the signal disrupted by trees etc so I put it down to low battery.

However, I recharged the battery & used it again this evening & it picks up signal & loses it every few seconds. I had to take it off auto pause as it as constantly making that noise when it auto pauses / resumes.

By the end of a 1 hr cycle it had only picked up 2km of cycling which I think demonstrates the issue I'm having!

Anyone else ever experienced this / have a solution?

    Thanks guys!

If you're riding with a cadence sensor make sure the wheel magnet is being picked up properly and after that if it's still giving jip try changing the cadence sensor battery. Worked for me when I was experiencing similar issues in the past.

Outside of that I've no other solutions to add short of updating the device firmware if there's any updates outstanding, IIRC there was a GPS chipset update not so long ago.

Hi Omnipulse i had exactly the same thing happen couple weeks ago. NOt sure why. I had turned auto pause off after it happened for a couple of rides and i set it back to factory settings but im not sure if you lose your past rides with that. i had deleted mine and saved them justin case you do it and lose all your history unintentionally.

Battery change in the cadence sensor, which also involved rechecking it's position, worked for me

+1 on the speed/cadence sensor (if you have one). GPS malfunctioning shouldn't trigger the autopause as your speed comes from the sensor. You can change the settings to say the speed/cadence sensor is not present which will cause your speed to be calculated through GPS. If this solves the problem, change the battery in the speed/cadence sensor, re-detect it and see if it's OK.

By the way, if the cadence is working fine but the speed is not, the reed switch in the extendible arm on the unit may be broken. This happens commonly enough as it's pretty delicate and a hard out of the saddle effort can cause enough wheel flex for the magnet to strike it. They will replace the whole unit under warranty if this has happened or there is a couple of bodges online which are worth trying if it's out of warranty.
