Replacing hard drive

How practical would it be for me to install a new hard drive or solid state drive into this little fella?

The drive makes a bit of noise and I would like to do the replacement myself to make sure I pay as little as possible.

Pretty easy to do in fairness. You can get instructions on ifixit.com on how to dismantle your machine and replace the drive. You could also upgrade the CPU to an i7 if you feel the need to !

Carbon Copy Cloner will clone the current drive leaving you free of the hassle of reinstalling all your data and programs.

Also have a look at a Fusion Drive setup which uses a SSD for the main boot drive and a HDD for data etc. There are reports of issues with this setup though, especially with large files.

Not wanting to sound off topic, but, to me, your kit seems to be worryingly "young" to be failing.
I got my iMac in 2008, possibly built in 2007, so you can see where I'm coming from!
Would it be wise to run a utility like TechTool to check if you really are in bother?

I don't think his disk is 'failing', if it was it probably would have died by now. A small % of HDDs make noise, I know this from an office environment I used to to work in. It doesn't seem to be a symptom of a drive that's going to crash soon, it just happens that some of them make noise for no apparent reason.

IF the drive is failing you might want to check this out:

We have a 2010 iMac. Had an SSD fitted by CompuB before Christmas. The difference is night and day. €200 for the drive. €80 for the labour. Life is too short really. Recommend them. Excellent company.
